Turning One 64-Minute Video into 19 Strategic Assets: My Content Repurposing Experiment

Dear WA Family,
I spent the entire day yesterday knee-deep in video editing, testing out a content strategy that I’ve been studying: Content Repurposing.
Instead of letting a massive 64-minute piece of content sit on my channel alone, I spent hours slicing it into smaller, bite-sized pieces. By the time I finished, that single long-form video yielded 3 mid-length videos and 16 YouTube Shorts.
If you create video or audio content or even long-form blog posts, repurposing isn't just a time-saver; it's how you respect your own effort and reach different types of audience members.
Why Repurposing Long-Form Content Works
Let’s face it: not every viewer has the time or attention span to sit through an hour-long video, no matter how valuable the information is.
- Mid-Length Videos (5–10 mins): Perfect for people looking for a specific answer or topic without watching the entire presentation.
- YouTube Shorts (Under 60 secs): Great for capturing quick attention on mobile, delivering a single powerful tip, and introducing new viewers to your brand.
By breaking down a comprehensive video, you meet your audience where they are, whether they have 30 seconds on their lunch break or 10 minutes during a commute.

To keep things completely transparent, here is where my original 64-minute video stands right now before publishing any of the repurposed clips:
- Published Date: August 31st at 10:00 PM
- Video Duration: 64:00 minutes
- Watch Time: 8.3 hours
- Click-Through Rate (CTR): 5.5%
- Average View Duration: 12:27 minutes
Now, the goal is to use the smaller clips as "entry doors" to bring even more people back to this main video.
Key Technical Guidelines to Keep in Mind
If you plan to try this strategy on your own YouTube channel or blog, keep these critical best practices in mind so YouTube treats your clips as fresh, high-quality uploads:
- Treat Each Mid-Length Video as Standalone: Don't just upload a raw clip. Every mid-length video needs its own unique thumbnail, compelling title, optimised description, and relevant tags.
- Format Shorts Correctly: Convert your horizontal video (16:9) into a vertical aspect ratio (9:16 or 1080x1920) so YouTube automatically classifies it as a Short.
- Link Back to the Anchor Video: Use YouTube’s "Related Video" feature inside YouTube Studio to link every Short and mid-length clip back to the original 64-minute video. This creates a natural pathway for viewers who want the deep-dive explanation.
- Avoid Spamming Your Subscribers: Instead of releasing all 19 assets at once, space them out over two to three weeks to maintain a consistent publishing cadence without overwhelming your channel feed.
The Rollout Plan
Over the next two weeks, I will be scheduling these 3 mid-length videos and 16 Shorts to go live. My goal isn't just to get quick views; it's to see if micro-content can genuinely drive qualified, engaged traffic back to long-form core content.
I'll be tracking the metrics closely and will report back to you all with the results once the rollout is complete!
What Is Your Strategy for Repurposing Content?
Whether you create YouTube videos, write detailed blog posts, or record audio, your content holds far more value than a single upload.
- Have you tried slicing your longer blog posts or videos into smaller micro-assets?
- What platform or format has given you the best return on effort when repurposing your work?
