I Don't Want a Job
For the last couple of weeks I've been contemplating that question. In fact I've pretty much stopped work on my internet business to do nothing but think about that question. Rather than go into my office and sit in front of my computer I've been getting up and going to the beach.
I live on Long Island, about 30 miles east of New York City and if you've never been here it really is a beautiful place. It’s hard to believe that just east of NYC are some of the nicest beaches in the United States. So I gave up going to my office to go sit on the beach and think. No computer, no cell phone, no distractions. Just me and my journal so that I could write down any thoughts that popped into my mind. All of that thinking that I did during that time has paid off because I think I might have hit upon something here.
Why is it that the vast majority of internet businesses fail? I've seen figures that show only 1% of internet businesses ever producing the kind of income that the owners had hoped for and that 95% will just outright fail. Yikes! That’s not good odds.
So let me ask you again. Why will the vast majority of internet businesses fail? Is it that the owners don’t work? I don’t think so. Sure some people don’t put in the time necessary to achieve the success they desire. But I tend to believe that most people that attempt to start an internet business try real hard to make it work. They put in a lot of time and learn as much as they can about internet marketing only to become disillusioned with their progress and quit. I can understand that because it’s hard to stay focused and positive when nothing seems to be going right.
No I don’t think it’s because the owners are not working I think that the problem is that they are working on the wrong things. Let me explain. As I stated earlier I was the President and CEO of a multi-million dollar company. If I had a question about sales I called my Sales Manager. If I had a question about finance I called my Accountant. If there was a problem with the computers my IT Manager took care of it and I never had to get involved.
Do you see where I’m going with this? My job was to run the company not to take care of every single detail of the day to day operations of the company. Now compare that to what I’m doing in my internet marketing business. I’m the IT guy, I’m the head of Sales, Accounting, Marketing and Legal. I’m in charge of SEO, Traffic, Keyword research, Customer Service and the list goes on and on. In fact if I sat down and really thought about every task that will have to be performed to build my company the list would be close to a hundred different jobs.
Is there any wonder why the majority of internet businesses will fail to deliver the kinds of results that the owners had dreamed of?
I like to think that I’m a pretty intelligent guy. But I’m not that smart. There is no way I’ll ever become an expert in all aspects of running an online business. Nor should I be. There are too many jobs that would take me hours upon hours to learn that others can do in the matter of minutes. If I spend all my time learning all the different jobs necessary to run my business all I’m going to have is a job that I won’t be able to break free of.
I don’t want a job! I want to run my company. I want to do what I do best. I want to get paid to think.

Interesting! I completely understand where you coming from. I felt the same way when I first joined here I was totally lost, back then I hardly knew keyboard let alone keyword. I wish that this is just as easy as cutting hair. No reading involve just comb and scissor that would be easy. I must tell you that it took me a while to learn the trade and I'm still learning.
Like you I delegate everything to other people but I'm always frustrated with the result I get. I told myself I wish I know how to do all these things this way I don't need to hire other people. So this is what gave me the motivation to learn... my desire to update my own business site that I paid so much money to build and know nothing about. Now I'm proud to say I can. And I know you can too.
Let me know if I can help...
Cheers,
Nenita
Thanks for the comment. I appreciate the offer of assistance. I agree with you that outsourcing can be difficult and the results sub-par. However, I believe most people approach outsourcing wrong because they are thinking "how can I get this done the cheapest" and as we all know the cheapest is almost never the most reliable or best choice.
In my opinion outsourcing should be about developing long term relationships with people who have expertise outside of your own. In this way you build a team of experts that you can call on whenever you need their help. Over time you'll build a team that will get better and better which will help your company grow.

I understand what you are saying. some us are not able to hire out all the jobs that is takes to get this done. So we are in the trenches learning it. I have to say some of my favorite bosses have been the bosses that had done what they were telling me what to do. I do beleive the Corp. chick-filla runs the way I have just stated.
Many great ones have not. Best of luck to you. I am sure you will get it done.
God bless

I understand that many people do not have the money to outsource. I'm going to repeat what I said to Kaliinozarks below. You don't need to have a large staff or a lot of resources what you need to have is resourcefulness. Many very successful businesses were started on a shoestring.

I was definately not where you was a couple of weeks ago!! I was in my noisy dirty factory operating a 200ton press making over engineered bolts for the aerospace industry. I would much prefer to have been sitting on a beautiful beach sipping on a cocktail with a little straw hat and writing in my notebook though lol. PM sent ty ty
I have always said that managers cause things to happen, not do everything themselves. I would like to have a staff, but I am poor at delegating. I believe that has held me back and you are geared toward much larger operations than I.
We all have our specialties.

Not sure what kws123 is saying but I hear you... This is exactly the troubles complete newbies like myself face when starting out. I am struggling quite a bit and you have given me some food for thought. Can you break down those jobs into a way that you can get A-B-C done but then look to outsource S-T-U and then yourself and your outsourcing combined can get to X-Y-Z????
I can get tasks done but I struggle with the WHOLE plan as a business and this is where I am stalling.
Good luck with that...just may take a little more than thinking. Hey if you find a way to get paid for thinking let me know.
