Fired and set Free

Why share this story? It's not about the corrupt unethical corporate environment, or even the site manager who lacks integrity, or the CEO, COO and President who failed to intervene take ownership of "their" company and were fed misleading incomplete information about a remote office. It's not about their total lack of human compassion, it's not about how inflated egos and self importance of those in power abuse their power and have their own agenda.

It's about YOU and everyone you love and know being prepared for the unexpected! It's how strong effective leaders are only valued when they forfeit their own integrity to serve the inappropriate desires of others! When you rise above being mediocre, the payment for doing so is criticism. Had I been the type of person that treated employees with little or no respect and kept a business as usual mentality i would still be employed with the company you are about to learn of...how unfortunate. The time and effort placed into the dream or company of someone else can all go down the drain in an instant!

You and I taking active steps and control of our future using Wealthy Affiliate is the best and smartest decision!

As an executive for over 20 years, I have worked for several fortune 500 companies coast to coast in various industries; Telecom, Insurance, Mortgage, Automotive, IT, Computer Hardware, Footwear to name a few.

After being hired yet again, this time by a California based footwear company with operations on the east coast, a small outfit near Newton, N.C. in an industrial park about 45 miles from Charlotte.

I was totally disillusioned by this U.S. corporation and their leaderships insatiable need for control and how they kept employees in a constant place of fear for their jobs. This was actually a "phone room" with 22 reps taking customer service calls, this company says they needed an experienced "call center" manager to focus on revenue generating opportunities.

This customer service department had been in operation for about six years and had several managers attempt to lead the group. The manager I replaced was from the retail environment and had "zero call center experience", hence she was returning to her specialty.

It was clear after a week in this new promising yet challenging assignment that there was serious infighting among the staff, there had been a history of vicious gossip, reports of harassment, poor performance, verbal arguments and constant manipulation and antagonistic actions by a trainer and a lead along with the former manager.

"The most uncomfortable place on the earth"

Within a month and a half the group began responding to coaching, feedback, corrective action, several processes were evaluated, improved and streamlined in addition to employees being cross trained. Most employees responded well and actually looked forward to coming to work, something they had not experienced in prior years.

Well this was short lived! The site manager who oversees the entire operation near Newton, was no longer in charge of customer service and made it known that he was upset about the department being managed by a director based in California who visited about once a month. This director was kept in the dark by previous managers, the site manager and human resources about this caustic environment, sharing this with him would have clearly revealed that the current site manger was very ineffective, took no action to correct matters and simply enjoyed the "drama" and negativity that spewed out of that group on a weekly basis.

The site manger had reams of documented incidents that he would read, and laugh about to other senior managers. Two of the individuals ( a trainer and a lead) retaliated when they were written up (which was approved by HR and the site manager) for unprofessional conduct and performance and held accountable (after all that's what I was hired for) as the remainder of the team was.

These individuals went on an all out attack ( as they had with previous managers) to vilify their new manager, create doubt about his ability and integrity. It worked.......because it played into the site managers desire to gain control of a group that he felt he had lost, the site manager seized the opportunity to release me after 63 days of employment!

The site manger gave the word to the director to release me and he followed orders, stating that"nothing that was said about you was substantiated, after reviewing everything we are letting you go." This statement was made in the absence of a job description that was never provided, no feedback about any policies, lots of double talk and in light of the fact that 95% of the team I led wanted me to remain.

Now immediately things were right back where they were. The site manger who had been with the company over 18 years was back in control and being feed the negativity he longed for, placing those two individuals in charge and subsequently assigning an internal manager in with "zero call center" experience. It's not that this organization did not or does not want change, "they chose" not to change.. Consider a quote from Andy Andrews;

“Most people think it takes a long time to change. It doesn't. Change is immediate! Instantaneous! It may take a long time to decide to change…but change happens in a heartbeat!” ― Andy Andrews

There I sat in my new home unemployed and unable to qualify for unemployment payments, one week final check being mailed, my written request for a one month severance was denied, most of my belongings still in California which needed to be shipped to the east coast. I moved into my new home a week prior to the surprise of being released.....the site manager, HR and my director was well aware of this move.

What I just explained is happening across the country on a daily basis and it could happen to you! Are you prepared? What's your plan B?

“In desperate times, much more than anything else, folks need perspective. For perspective brings calm. Calm leads to clear thinking. Clear thinking yields new ideas. And ideas produce the bloom...of an answer. Keep your head and heart clear. Perspective can just as easily be lost as it can be found.” “I will not waste time on second thoughts. My life will not be an apology. It will be a statement.”― Andy Andrews
