Watch Out! Who's Posted Via Your Site?
Hello fellow WA people!
I just wanted to share this in case it helps somebody.
I don't very often (aka never) check the admins for my blog because logically I don't expect them to change; I mean I don't go having admin parties so there's wouldn't be much to get excited about by reading the admin list, would there?
And as I'm the only admin to my site, why would I check it?
So you can imagine my surprise when I logged in to my admin and found another stranger there, registered as an admin to the site. Goodness knows how long s/he's been there.
I deleted the additional uninvited guest and have now discovered paragraph blocks at the end of posts (no idea how many yet) which contain rude content. Luckily, the two which I've found so far were rendered as blocks with errors.
I made a mistake when I deleted the Fake admin: I was asked whether I wanted to delete their 'content' or sign it over to the other admin (me).
Well I had no idea what was going on and I was nervous to press 'delete' in case some of my posts had been assigned to them and half my site would vanish, so I chose to save the content.
Now I know what content they've been spreading I wish I had deleted it! But all is easy with hindsight!
I now need to check the site over and see what else I find lurking in hiding there.
I have no idea how this could happen. It's not from any friends as I've never shared the admin with anybody except with a plugin company - so it must have been hacked through that link? Or maybe they can just hack in even when you don't share it ever?
Anyway, if you can shed some light on it for me, I'd be very interested, and if not, well maybe just keep an eye on your site that there aren't any unexpected guests lurking around!
Cheers!

Hi, Soray.
No worries.
Click on websites .
Choose Sitemanager
Scroll up or down to find the site you want to edit and log in.
Once clicked, on the left sidebar, you will see some options.
Click on settings and then General
Halfway down the page, you will see " New User Default Role."
Click on the down arrow and you will see your options.
Choose one of the four.
The "membership" box above that box also gives you an option.
If you want anyone to register, check it.
Scroll down and click on the blue and white button that says: "Save Changes."
Easy peasy, right?
Paul from Canada.
Cheers.
Hi Paul, Thanks for your good intention . . . but I'm not sure why? The New User Role was subscriber but I still got the uninvited admin in. I think maybe there's a misunderstanding about what my issue was?
Hi - go to Settings and General, there is a Membership box. Have you allowed subscribers?
Hiya, no, the allow anybody to join Membership box isn't ticked. I have no idea how this happened tbh.
This is very disturbing! You had no idea that someone else had Admin access to your website via Wordpress?? How did this happen? Did you have some kind of membership plugin or something? As Simone said get support on this ASAP!
Hi, no, I had/have no idea how it was possible. No memberships or anything like that. Trouble is, in reaction to the surprise/shock of seeing it, I deleted it all. So there's nothing I can show to Site support now. But I will keep an eye on it from now on.
Well!!! I don't know what to say but it must be discomforting! Dang I would be on my guard! Do you host your website through WA?
Contact SiteSupport none the less and explain what happened as well as that you've immediately deleted everything. They may be able to check it on backups! But don't delay, let them know a.s.a.p.

Sorry about that.
So many unbelievable things are happening these days.
As said, it's best to contact site support still.
Thank you, yes I will do that now.
