New Theme Update Report - Good Surprises! Edit - Mistaken!
Happy Saturday!
Edit: after writing this and working on the staging site for a while, it decided to lose its formatting on the home page. Makes no sense to me but there you go. Changing theme without losing anything was just a dream!
Nothing that I do on the staging site behaves in the same way as on the live site.
original post:
Thank you to everyone who put me in touch with the concept of having a staging site so that I could check out the effect of switching themes!
After the initial disappointment of discovering that the new theme isn't going to completely rescue my site speed, I now have a positive surprise to report.
I was so worried about all the work that would come from switching themes, thinking that my site would need a complete overhaul and that lots of things would be lost.
But in fact . . . it hasn't lost anything! (Yes, ok, I know, I hear you . . . you told me so hahahaha, ok maybe you did)
The only change is in the aesthetics!
So I'm thinking of buying the premium version of Generate Press and switching the live site over immediately.
I can always tweak the design and look of the site over the next few days/weeks no?
Is there any reason why I shouldn't jump in the deep end like this? I mean it's not as if my site is famous, with millions of loyal visitors, so why would it matter if it looks different for a couple of weeks?
Pros of Going Live Immediately
- no time pressure on adjusting the theme as the site speed will improve ( a little) NOW immediately.
- So, no delays on speeding up the site - thought I better repeat that one! As it's pretty important I think 😂
- I can buy the premium version of the theme and install it directly to where it's going. (How would I switch the premium version theme from my staging site to my live site anyhow?)
- I won't have to make a note of all the changes and then apply them twice
Cons of Going Live Immediately
- I might have overlooked something which gets broken with the change of theme
- Maybe I'm being rash?
- Perhaps it's bad to have a website that changes its image over the course of a few weeks?
- ??
Would love to hear your thoughts!
Thanks for reading and have a fabulous day!

Do what YOU think is best, Soraya, and at the end of the day, you could always change it back!
Keep succeeding!

Hi Jeff!
Thanks! Yes in the end that's exactly what I did.
I changed the live site to the new theme but then it was NOTHING like the reaction from the staging site lol!
I hate the look of the new site, whereas the staging site didn't actually change its homepage look.
So I have no idea now what's going on. I've changed the live site back to its original theme and will take a coffee break now.
Gosh, never expected the staging site to behave differently to the main site. It doesn't make sense!
Cheers!
Soraya
That's good that you went back to the original. I had some headaches wit my site in the same respects! You will get it figured out. They tell us we should always worry about the quality content vs. appearance, and right now that's what I am focusing on. In the end, you will get it figured out, my friend!
Jeff😎👍
You're very welcome, Soraya, and I KNOW that you will get to where you wish to be!

So when you say that nothing on the staging site behaves in the same way on the live site, it sounds to me like you’re experimenting on the staging site and then trying to replicate those changes to your live site. Don’t give yourself twice the work. Instead. Make all changes you’d like to make on the staging site, and when it’s looking exactly right, simply use the Move Function to move that staging site directly to your live site. No need to try to recreate what you’ve just done, you just move it and there’s no surprises as to how it will look.
Hi Eric,
yes I get what you're saying, but it hadn't got that far - I hadn't put in much work on the test site.
As soon as I changed the theme I was so surprised that the homepage looked just the same! The test site was SO unchanged that I thought I could do any tweaking directly on the live site.
However, when I activated the GP them on the live site EVERYTHING changed - gone!
That just doesn't make sense to me.
Zero. Zip. Ziltch.
So, I could continue to work on the staging site, but how can it feel safe that it won't be lost when I transfer it over, or even why isn't it lost already? And how will it keep up to date with new publications if it isn't really supposed to be there in the old format? Why would it have one format (i.e. my old site 'look') and the live site have another?
As you can see, I'm confused.
Soraya
When you use the move function it acts as a redirect. So literally what you see on your screen in staging is what you get.
So build up your staging site exactly how you like, and then when it’s perfect, all you do is redirect using the move function. It’s a great way to test out new things and then make them live. :)
Thank you! I will keep going with it! :)
You got this!
