How much private info are you sharing online?

Are you in a niche were it is important for your audience to know you and trust you? With my real estate niche, it is VERY important can earn people’s trust. After all, I hope they will trust me enough to give me a set of keys to their house. Even if they are still living in it.

At the moment, I have not made very many YouTube videos. I probably could count them on my fingers. Yet in January, on two occasions, I had a male acquaintance tell me that he watched one of my videos on YouTube. The weird thing was that neither man was in the market to buy or sell real estate. On one hand, I was flattered. On the other hand, I have taken time to seriously consider what I am putting out there for the world to see.

Naturally, I am ecstatic that people are finding my videos. That is the whole point of publishing them. However, I realize that we should be very careful with what we are posting online because people that are not part of our target audience might actually see the videos.

On the other hand, are we sharing so much information that someone might be tempted to burglarize our house? Kidnap our dog when we are at gone?

Well, I am confident that I don’t have to worry about someone kidnapping my dog. Most people are scared of her even when she is walking nicely on a leash.

I’ve lost count of the times over the years that someone that I was planning to do business with commented that they read my real estate blog online prior to meeting me. They were willing to meet me because of what they read. I must assume that I’ve also lost some potential clients because they did not like what I said.

We should all be keenly aware that we could lose business , a job prospect or a even a potential mate because of what we have posted online.

As online marketers, we need to always be considering how much information are we sharing.

Do you have any tips that you can share to maintain the optimal balance between maintaining privacy; while at the same time being authentic and relatable?

Thanks in advance

Sondra

I had to do a background search on someone recently since I was potentially hiring them to help my elderly mom.

I can tell you that all anyone needs online is your first and last name, your approximate age, and the state or province you live in to get access to your most important information including your exact address and current phone number if you own property and how much it's assessed for, criminal history, etc. All this and more for approximately $30.

I don't have the answer for real estate brokers who need to gain public trust. You have to have some kind of presence - but at the same time, women especially, need to be very, very cautious. Maybe you can ask some other realtors in your area how to handle this.

Hi Wendy thanks! I am glad you took extra steps to ensure you that the caretaker could be trusted with your mom.

Take care

It's important for our target audience to trust us Sondra, but I would always be wary about giving out too much personal information...

There's a balance there that must be found, unfortunately I haven't found it myself so far!

3

Balance….that is a good way to describe what I am searching for.

I hope you have a great weekend.

Happy to help Sondra and have a fabulous weekend yourself my friend!

In this environment everyone needs to use caution. There are just some bad people out there.

So true. Yet at same time, we should try to avoid living in fear.

Hmm. Very good questions, Sondra. I truly don't know the answers to them. I am very tight with the info that I give out. Even my buddy JeffreyBrown on here has a vague idea from the info I have given him of where I live. Does that mean he could not find my home? No. It just means we have to be certain of who we are trusting our personal lives too. Be careful.

Blessed Be

Hi JD.

One thing I like about WA is the ability to get to know people over time. It seems like if someone is a scam artist, they can’t keep up a charade for long periods of time.

Do you live in the same area as Jeff?

2

No. Jeff lives in Kansas and I live in Texas.

A scam artist would have to be a pro to keep it up for a long time, I would think.

Texas is a great state.

Sondra, I could very easily write a blog post answering your questions. I would assume you wouldn't like the answers I write either. Capcise? See the irony here. If not get it then PM me

Hi Brenda, thank you for the message. On some things, there is no one perfect answer or solution.

We just need to make sure that we are thinking about what we are doing.

Ps. I value your friendship and honesty.
