Malicious software and Internet security
What is the preferred Browser, Internet Security, Firewall, etc. that you would suggest? Why do you prefer it to others?
I am just coming back from resetting my computer to factory, barring the fact that I still have Win10 instead of Win 8.1 (which was factory). I contracted a malicious software and am not excited about going through it again.
Have you encountered this or have any concerns about other users here on WA infecting your system accidentally or otherwise? I'm not sure why, where, when, or how, but I just want a good solution from here forward.
Thanks for your input.

Windows is just bad. I never got anything til I got Windows vista. Then I had several. I use Firefox search engine instead of internet explorer. I have anti malware and Super anti spyware professional. They seem to be working pretty good. Fingers crossed.
Hi Rita, I agree with not using Windows defender. It is not as effective as other antivirus software out on the market. I resonally use AVG. You can download it as a free trial to check it out before you decide to purchase it.
Regards,
Jerome
Thanks Jerome. I agree. I used to use it all the time while I was gaining my last degree due to all the crazy web research I was involved with. I again find that I am doing pretty much the same risky researching, but not the same content that was so vulnerable. Yet, we know how hackers are roaches crawling around everywhere. So AVG is back on my network, cell phone, and PC. I also added a program called Blur to scramble my IDs.
I am pretty sure that I have some Ransomware on my PC that took over admin rights for some of my files. Even after reloading my OS, I still cannot access them. I am searching for a solution. I can't image the benefit of someone holding these simple docs that are now inaccessible, for ransom. It is an unfunny laughing matter based upon the particular files they have commandeered.
I would simply delete them, but I cannot even do that. This stuff is frustrating. More research ahead. If I am not able to eradicate it, I don't feel right moving forward until I get it resolved.
No hacker could possibly see me as a prosperous venture. At least not at this moment in time. I'm broke, but hopefully in a few months I will be so secure that they would have to wake up earlier than me to get into my system. God willing!
So anyone and everyone with cyber security information, PLEASE share. Thank you graciously for help with this very important topic.
Hi Rita,
I do not use the Microsoft software for this purpose in Windows 10. For at least five years I have used AVG Internet Security for virus protection and firewall. And I use Malwarebytes Anti Malware. They regularly catch dangerous items on an ongoing basis and when I do a scan. They cover both going online and check my email as it downloads to my computer which seems to be where more of the bad stuff comes from.
Thanks
Joe
Please tell me why you do not use Defender? I had used SpyBot Search & Destroy as well as System Mechanics. These turned off Defender and I went through hours online with Microsoft resolving the fact that my computer was defenseless after I removed them. Defender would not go back on, even though I am the Admin. account. I almost had to do a total reset, but Microsoft was able, after hours and reaching a second tech support person, to get Defender running again. Is this why I now have notice of a Trojan virus? Defender is not strong enough to protect? Microsoft says that Defender has everything I need to run constant protection. I am wondering if I got the virus while I was waiting to fix the Defender issue. Obviously, the virus has not stopped my computer, yet I am unable to complete the removal of the said virus. I think I wanted to remove System Mechanics because my computer started running even slower. I had already removed SpyBot S & D. By the way, Microsoft had a real task to remove all of the SpyBot files. These do not automatically remove themselves when you uninstall it. Rootkit is a real bugger! Hence, the long hours with MS Support. Never use SpyBot! After Support was finished my computer ran a little faster. Now I still have concerns. Any light you can shed on these issues, please? Thanks! I may try the AVG. My son used to recommend this. Lynne
Hi Lynn,
I had used the Windows system to protect my computer for awhile a number of years ago. But I had nothing but problems with them not catching things and when they did, I had a heck of a time removing them. Microsoft does not make it easy. And now that I have been using Windows 10, every time they do an update, something is changed in the way I am set up and it drives me crazy. So I use Microsoft the least I can. They have you by the nose (was going to say something else but I am a gentleman :>) ) and you almost have to beg them to set things right. So now with AVG it automatically turns off Defender and the firewall and I haven't had any recent problems (knock on wood!!)
AVG has a free option which I used for awhile and use on a second computer and my laptop. But I changed my main computer to the paid version since I wanted a little more protection. Have a great day!
Joe
P.S. Sorry I called you Rita on my first message, don't know where I got that. Probably too much time in front of the computer!
No worries. Thanks and I was just going to give an update. I have been successful in removing the virus! Thanks for the information. I will take it to heart!
Joe,
Thank you for your information. It was really confirmation to me. I used to use AVG (free version) until I switched to Kaspersky, that does not work with Win10. Malwarebytes has helped to a certain point in the past, but this darn Win10 is so virus prone. I tried to reset back to the factory OS Win 8.1, but it would not allow such and reset the dang Win10 with the restart.
I like to use Firefox since it is #1 with Privacy, but the vulnerability is worrisome. I installed NoScript, but then some many sites have JavaScript that must perform or you can't view sites. They say Chrome is better for virus security, but is horrible with privacy.
Some day....................just maybe.................a security protection package with malware, virus, worm, trojan, privacy compliance, and everything we need to stay secure will come down the pipes. Until them, I'm loading the tried and true AVG & Malwarebytes again.
Thanks for your reconfirming info.
Gratefully,
Rita
I was able to get my Defender back on with the help of Microsoft Support. Then I ran a quick scan. This did not turn up the virus. I soon ran a full scan. This is when that virus showed up. When I hit the Repair function it did not complete. I just left it sitting as is, diminished the scan results window to continue working in WA. When I went to close up all my windows I saw that window HAD been continuing to run and the fix was complete. I never had to call support again. I will consider getting AVG, however.
I have been familiar with Windows Defender Firewall Rita but it is 3rd rate behind some of the newest Cisco ones. For our WordPress sites there is an "all in one" plugin firewall (learn something new every day).I believe it is stateful in security application. Described here.https://wordpress.org/plugins/all-in-one-wp-security-and-firewall/
Thanks, I have not purchased the all-in-one package. Will I not be able to use a good firewall? I have Defender on my computer, however, I just ran a full scan and came up with a Trojan virus listed as detected. I tried to use the Clean PC and it will not finish taking it off. I have restarted the fix again, same result. Mr. Kearns, do you know how to troubleshoot on this? My PC is running just fine, or at least as well as usual.
It's been years since I have been fully involved and a lot of the detection and prevention techniques have changed. We use site support here for cybersecurity issues!
Yes, and I am getting ready to leave the safety of the nest when I purchase my domain! No worries, I will contact Microsoft support. Thanks, turning in for the night. I've totally crashed! Too much Thanksgiving family stuff going on. I will take this up in the a.m.

So it was not Randsomware after all. It was a feature in Windows that made me search high and low to find the solution, but I found it and have been able to change all permissions in Windows.
Though I liked Linux in the beginning, I was not happy when it locked up on me twice and required a hard reboot. Also, the programs were not as easy to manipulate as with Windows, particularly with editing photos.
Therefore, I have reverted back to a factory reload with an original copy of Win 8.1 until I am forced to switch OS again. I did add OpenDNS to my network and feel that will help a lot along with other higher forms of security.
I plan on making this big enough for me and my daughter so I can get my life and finances back in order. I can't tell you how sad I am to have to return groceries to the grocery store that we simply cannot afford to have.
I'm disgusted and that means furiously motivated, if the dang computer cooperates with me.
Who needs sleep??? We will get plenty when we are dead. Right?
