Claim your free WPMU DEV gift - Not sure what it is but need some advice on whether or not to claim this. Would it affect my website?

I Googled free WPMU DEV gift and all there is from long time ago 2015, 2014 articles? and one ad says 7 days free then so much a month.
It depends what it is and what it does. Can't really say! However WPMU DEV is a reputable business.

Is Akismet Anti-spam a good plugin to use? I would like to know if I should have a paid subscription?

If you want to avoid adding another plugin, you can go to settings --> discussion menu in your WordPress back-office and add the IP addresses of the spam comments in the "blacklist" window.
This is the method I use, and it works quite well.
