You want to know what the hardest thing in affiliate marketing is?
It’s not building a website or writing a blog post.
It’s picking your niche.
Most people either go straight for what’s trending or chase whatever they think will make them the most money. But the real question is:
How do you pick the best niche for YOU?
Let me keep it real…
When I first started out, I didn’t want to follow anyone. I wasn’t interested in pushing the same “top 10” products just because they were popular.
What I did want—was to build something real.
That’s what Wealthy Affiliate promised I could do:
Design and build an online business that actually succeeds.
Yes, I have an affiliate site that helps people build their dream. But to me, that’s the extra.
What I care most about is what’s different. The project I built from scratch. The one that took work—but came straight from what I believe in.
Because I wanted to prove something:
That you don’t need to follow the crowd. That if you build what you believe in—and stick with it—you can do something great.
Take it from me—people told me I was crazy for doing what I’m doing now. They said the books I was writing wouldn’t sell because they weren’t “trending.” But I proved them wrong.
I wrote books about what I love. And so far, I’ve sold at least one every month. Some are getting read regularly. I’ve made about $80 already from an idea I simply put out there—with zero upfront cost and 100% profit.
This is only the beginning.
So if you’re wondering whether you can build something real, something outside the box—the answer is yes.
Follow the WA training. Trust the process.
With Wealthy Affiliate, you can literally build whatever you want.
Now let’s talk about how to find your niche—because that’s the first step toward building something that matters.
1. What Are You Actually Into?
Start with what you already spend time on—your passions. It could be Bigfoot sightings, wilderness skills, online tools, or spiritual growth. Believe me—you have something.
If you don’t enjoy it now, you won’t enjoy writing or posting about it later. And your audience will feel that.
Ask yourself:
- What could I talk about for hours and never get bored?
- What do people already come to me for?
- What have I figured out that others are still struggling with?
That’s your starting point. That’s where your strength lives.
2. Is There a Market for It?
Loving your niche is important—but you also need to make sure others are looking for it.
And here’s the thing: you are your best tool in this process. If it’s something you’re into, others are probably searching for it too.
Here’s what to look at:
- Use Google Trends to check if interest is growing.
- Google Shopping — see what comes up first on Google see what people are buying for products in this space?
- Join Facebook groups or forums around your topic. Are people asking questions? Is there real discussion?
If yes—you’ve found something worth building around.
Pro tip: Don’t stick to just one affiliate program. There are programs for everything—Amazon, Bass Pro, Nike, Sony—you name it.
3. Can You Build a Whole Brand Around It?
This isn’t just about one product. It’s about building something bigger—a blog, a YouTube channel, maybe even a community.
Ask yourself:
- Can I create content around this consistently?
- Is there space to grow—into products, partnerships, or new topics?
- Does it reflect something real in my life?
If you can sit down and come up with 20 blog or video ideas right away, you’re golden. If you can picture yourself still excited about it a year from now, that’s your go.
4. What If You Still Can’t Decide?
Here’s what I recommend:
Take your top 3 favorite ideas—then do a little research.
- What comes up when you search those topics?
- What kind of affiliate products could you promote?
- Are there existing programs that fit?
Pick something you love or are truly interested in—because you’ll be learning and talking about it a lot as you build blogs, social posts, and content.
Don’t overthink it to the point where you never start. Stay in the lane that lights you up—and you’ll always win.
Starting imperfectly is still better than not starting at all.
Build something small. Test ideas. Watch what sticks.
Final Thought
Don’t pick your niche based on hype or fast money. Pick something you care about—something you’d still talk about even if no one was listening.
That passion? That’s your fuel.
Because once it clicks—and it will if you stay in the game—everything gets easier. Your content flows better. Your belief gets stronger.
So go build your thing. Start with what feels right. And if you ever get stuck—reach out. I’ve been there. We’ll figure it out together.

Good post there Shawn. I can relate to that experience where one goes North and South to look for a niche. Especially when you learn that your niche is too broad, narrow it down further. That is a scary experience. I like the part where you said " Starting imperfectly is still better than not starting at all. Build something small. You nailed it.

Thanks Raymond, really appreciate that. And yeah, finding that niche sweet spot can feel like navigating a maze at first. I’ve definitely gone a few wrong directions before it started making sense. Glad that line hit home, imperfect starts are how we grow into something real. Wishing you continued momentum, my friend!

Absolutely, that’s the fuel that keeps it all moving forward. Appreciate you dropping that reminder!

Power post!!!
You can make a lot of money as a plumber but if your heart is in hot rod restoration I can tell you which business will bring you more success and you will still love 20 years from now. Don't let a desire for safety be a great wall separating you from your dream business.
That’s exactly it, passion’s got a way of outlasting profit when things get tough. Love that hot rod example too. When you build from the heart, the grind doesn’t feel like a grind, it feels like purpose. Appreciate the power drop, my friend!
