St. Patrick’s Day, Irish Storytelling, and Why Stories Still Shape Who We Become

Hey WA fam,

Happy St. Patrick’s Day.

Today people all over the world are wearing something green, pouring a pint, and celebrating Irish culture.

But I want to talk about something a little deeper for a moment.

Because Ireland isn’t just about shamrocks and green beer.

Ireland is about stories.

And if you’re a writer, a creator, or someone building something online, there may be no culture in the world that shows the power of storytelling better than Ireland does.

Ireland is a land where stories lived long before books existed.

Stories were passed from one generation to the next by word of mouth. Around fires. In pubs. Across hillsides and villages.

And somehow those stories survived hundreds, sometimes thousands of years.

Think about that for a moment.

Not because they were written down.

But because they were worth remembering.

☘️ Ireland Was Built on Storytellers

Long before the internet…

Long before publishing houses…

Ireland had something called the oral tradition.

Storytellers known as the filí were responsible for preserving the culture of the land.

These weren’t just entertainers.

They were historians.

Poets.

Keepers of myth and memory.

They carried stories about the great mythological cycles of Ireland:

  • The Ulster Cycle
  • The Fenian Cycle
  • The Mythological Cycle

Stories of warriors, spirits, and ancient beings that shaped how people understood the world around them.

Many of these stories survived centuries before anyone ever wrote them down.

Which tells you something important.

People forget information.

But they rarely forget a great story.

☘️ The Man Behind St. Patrick’s Day

Of course, today also honors a historical figure: Saint Patrick. Most people know the simple version of the story, but the real history is actually pretty fascinating. Saint Patrick was born in Roman Britain during the late 4th century. When he was about 16 years old, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland as a slave. He spent six years working as a shepherd before escaping and returning home.

Later in life, he returned to Ireland as a Christian missionary, helping spread Christianity across the island. Over time, he became one of the most important religious figures in Irish history.

Now here’s something interesting. The famous story about Saint Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland is almost certainly symbolic. Ireland didn’t actually have native snake populations after the last Ice Age. Historians believe the “snakes” represented older pagan traditions being replaced as Christianity spread. So once again, even history itself shows us something: Stories often carry deeper meanings beneath the surface.

☘️ Irish Folklore and the Wild Things of the Woods

Ireland is also famous for its folklore.

Some of the most well-known legends include:

  • Leprechauns
  • Banshees
  • The Púca
  • The Dullahan
  • The Oilliphéist

But there’s another theme that appears in many cultures.

The idea of the wild man of the forest.

Hairy figures that lived outside civilization.

Creatures somewhere between human and something older.

Different cultures describe them differently.

But the idea appears again and again.

And honestly, maybe that’s one reason I’ve always been fascinated by the Sasquatch topic.

Even in ancient folklore, stories about mysterious beings living in the woods weren’t unusual.

  • Different lands.
  • Different names.

But sometimes the patterns feel strangely familiar.

☘️ Maybe My Irish Roots Explain Something

Someone said something to me the other day in a comment.

They called me a master class storyteller.

Now I’m not sure I’d go that far.

But I will say this.

Maybe storytelling comes a little naturally for a reason.

Ireland has produced storytellers for centuries.

  • Poets.
  • Writers.
  • Myth keepers.

People who could hold a room with nothing but words.

Maybe that tradition passes down somewhere along the line.

Maybe that’s why I enjoy writing so much.

Maybe that’s why curiosity keeps pulling me into new ideas.

And maybe that’s why I’ve written so many books and blogs over the last couple of years.

If you’ve got Irish roots…

You probably understand exactly what I mean.

Storytelling, humor, and conversation are just part of the culture.

And if you’re not Irish?

Don’t worry.

Just find an Irish friend like me.

We’ll make sure you hear a few stories anyway.

☘️ Writers Today Carry the Same Tradition

A thousand years ago stories traveled through villages and fireside gatherings.

Today they travel through:

  • blogs
  • books
  • podcasts
  • websites
  • social media
  • online communities

The tools have changed.

But storytelling itself hasn’t changed at all.

People still connect with stories.

And honestly, that’s something I’ve been learning more and more about right here inside Wealthy Affiliate.

Wealthy Affiliate is one of those rare places on the internet that actually encourages people to:

  • write
  • build
  • create
  • share ideas
  • and develop their voice

And over time something interesting happens.

Your writing gets stronger.

Your storytelling improves.

And you start realizing you had a voice all along.

You just needed the right place to grow it.

☘️ Last year on St. Patrick’s Day, I wrote a blog here too.

Before I wrap this up today, I want to show you something interesting.

You just read this blog.

Now I want you to read something else.

Here it is:

The Spirit of St. Patrick’s Day: How Irish Folklore Inspired My Journey

Go read it.

Then come back and read this one again.

What you’re looking at is two sides of the same coin.

  • Same writer.
  • Same holiday.
  • One year apart.

The difference between those two posts shows something powerful.

  • Growth.
  • Learning.
  • Practice.

And honestly, a lot of that growth came from being part of Wealthy Affiliate.

This platform teaches you how to build something real.

How to write better.

How to share ideas.

And how to bring the best version of yourself into the world.

I’ve shown you proof right here.

Two blogs.

One year apart.

Same person.

Completely different level.

That’s the power this platform can unlock if you stick with it.

☘️ A Final Thought This St. Patrick’s Day

So if you’re Irish today…

and honor the culture that kept storytelling alive for centuries.

And if you’re not Irish…

Find someone who is and listen to a few good stories.

Trust me.

They’ve got plenty.

And for me personally, I’m grateful for one thing this St. Patrick’s Day.

The ability to tell my stories right here with all of you at Wealthy Affiliate.

Without this place and the community around it, I honestly wouldn’t be writing here today.

So for that I say thank you.

I raise my glass to you all.

Have a fantastic St. Patrick’s Day.

Stay safe.

Keep your green beer topped up today.

And don’t forget to collect a few stories along the way.

See you guys in the next one.

Stay curious.

Stay wild.
