The Spirit of St. Patrick’s Day: How Irish Folklore Inspired My Journey

St. Patrick’s Day is more than a holiday for me. It’s a connection to my roots, a love for storytelling, and the reason I started my business. My family traces back to Ireland in the 1800s, and though I was born far from its rolling green hills, I feel a deep connection to its myths, legends, and history.

From ancient tales of faeries and banshees to whispered stories of creatures lurking in the forests, Ireland has always been a land of mystery, magic, and the unexplained. And it’s that very magic that led me down the path of writing, research, and building my own brand.

A Brief History of Ireland: A Land of Strength and Mystery

Ireland’s history is one of resilience, hardship, and deep cultural roots. Known as the Emerald Isle, it has been home to warriors, poets, and storytellers for thousands of years.

Ancient Ireland & Celtic Mythology

Before written history, Ireland was ruled by powerful Celtic tribes who left behind stone circles, burial mounds, and legends of gods and magical beings. The Tuatha Dé Danann, an ancient supernatural race, were said to descend from the heavens and bring mystical knowledge to the land.

Druids, the spiritual leaders of the Celts, preserved knowledge through oral tradition, telling stories of great battles, sacred lands, and the spirit of Ireland itself. This period gave birth to many of the myths and legends that still fascinate me today.

The Viking Invasions (8th–11th Century)

In the 8th century, Ireland saw the arrival of the Vikings, fierce warriors from Scandinavia. They raided monasteries and villages but also founded important cities like Dublin, Waterford, and Limerick. Over time, they intermarried with the Irish, blending Norse and Gaelic cultures.

Norman Invasion & British Rule (12th Century – 20th Century)

In 1169, the Normans from England invaded Ireland, beginning centuries of foreign rule. This led to the gradual loss of Irish sovereignty, with many Irish forced off their lands and their language and traditions suppressed.

The Great Famine (1845–1852) was one of the darkest times in Irish history, when a potato blight caused widespread starvation. Over one million people died, and another million emigrated, many to America and Canada, which is how my own ancestors found their way to new lands.

The Fight for Independence & Modern Ireland

After centuries of struggle, Ireland fought for its freedom. The Easter Rising of 1916 and the subsequent Irish War of Independence (1919–1921) led to the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922. However, Northern Ireland remained part of the UK, leading to decades of unrest known as The Troubles.

Today, Ireland is a thriving, independent country that has held on to its traditions, myths, and strong cultural identity.

The Power of Irish Folklore: A Lifelong Fascination

Ireland has never been just a place—it’s a story woven through time. Long before books and the internet, the Irish passed down their history through legends, songs, and spoken word, keeping alive a culture of mystery and wonder.

I was drawn to these stories from a young age, fascinated by the idea that something unseen could be lurking just beyond the veil. That fascination never faded—it only grew, leading me to explore Bigfoot, ghosts, cryptids, and everything that exists just outside the realm of what we call reality.

Some of my favorite Irish legends that shaped my journey include:

1. The Leprechaun – The Trickster of the Emerald Isle

Not just a silly cartoon character, leprechauns are deeply rooted in Irish folklore. These mischievous fae were believed to guard hidden gold, granting fortune to those clever enough to outwit them. Their stories taught me something important:

Mystery and adventure are everywhere—you just have to be willing to chase them.

2. The Banshee – The Ghostly Wail of Fate

The banshee is one of the most chilling spirits in Irish lore, said to foretell death with her mournful cry. Many claim to have heard her, a reminder that some legends refuse to fade.

This legend sparked my passion for paranormal research. It made me question what’s real, what’s myth, and what still lingers in the shadows.

3. The Tuatha Dé Danann – The Ancient Race of Supernatural Beings

Before Ireland was Ireland, legends spoke of the Tuatha Dé Danann, a powerful race of otherworldly beings who ruled the land. They were warriors, healers, and mystics, said to have faded into the hills and forests but never truly disappeared.

This story, more than any other, made me believe in the unseen and the importance of preserving myths and legends.

How Folklore Led Me to Start My Business

People often ask me why I chose my niche—why I write about Bigfoot, the paranormal, and the unknown. The answer is simple:

I’ve always been drawn to the stories that make us wonder.

Folklore isn’t just entertainment—it’s a gateway to discovery. It’s a record of ancient beliefs, mysteries, and experiences that refuse to be forgotten. And as I delved deeper into my research, I realized:

• There are people out there just like me, searching for answers, drawn to the unknown.

• There’s a need for quality gear, books, and resources to help others explore these mysteries for themselves.

• I wanted to create something bigger than just a hobby—a business built on curiosity, adventure, and the pursuit of the unexplained.

And so, my brand was born.

I didn’t start this business just to sell products or write stories. I started it because I believe there’s more out there—more to uncover, more to explore, and more people who share this passion.

The Irish Spirit of Resilience & Business

Irish history is filled with struggle, perseverance, and strength. From the Great Famine to centuries of hardship, the Irish have always found a way to survive, adapt, and thrive.

That same unbreakable spirit runs through my veins, and it fuels my journey as a writer, entrepreneur, and explorer of the unknown.

Starting a business isn’t easy. It’s a long road, filled with challenges, self-doubt, and setbacks. But if the Irish have taught me anything, it’s this:

→ Never give up.

→ Keep telling your story.

→ And always leave room for a little mystery.

Final Thoughts

St. Patrick’s Day isn’t just about parades and green beer—it’s about honoring the past, embracing the unknown, and celebrating the journey ahead.

For me, it’s a reminder that stories have power, that legends still matter, and that there’s always something left to discover.

I’ll leave you with this amazing Irish blessing:

”May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.” ☘️

Sláinte! (Cheers!)

Wow I love Irish people

Hi Asratteso, Ireland is incredible! The culture, the history, and the legends—there’s so much to love. Do you have Irish roots, or are you just a big fan?

Excellent Shawn. Thanks for sharing this.
I'm not Irish but I have Celtic roots which keep me enthralled by the Emerald Isle, Wales and Scotland.
I think there's many an Irish man and woman I know (and I know a few) who have seen all 3 of those mythical creatures after a night celebrating St Patrick's Day!! :)
Others may say it's the celebratory drinks, but you and I know, that they really exist! :)
And the Irish accent is my favourite!
Happy St Patrick's Day to you and all.

Thank you so much, Gail! I love that connection to your Celtic roots—there’s so much rich history and legend woven through Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. And I have to agree, after a good St. Patrick’s Day celebration, more than a few folks might have had an unexpected encounter with those mythical beings! But like you said, you and I know the truth… they’re out there!

And yes, the Irish accent is something special—there’s a certain magic in the way it carries a story.

Wishing you a Happy St. Patrick’s Day as well! May the luck of the Irish and the spirit of the Celts always be with you! 🍀

Thank u, Shawn, This means a lot to the Irish!

You’re most welcome, MrWillan! The Irish spirit runs deep—it’s a legacy of resilience, storytelling, and a connection to something greater than ourselves. As they say, “The Irish do not see the world as it is; they see the world as they are.” And that’s what makes their history, myths, and traditions so powerful.

May the road rise to meet you, and may the magic of your heritage always guide you forward!
