What Does Hitting Bottom Mean to You?

I am writing about "hitting bottom" because I feel like there are tons of people who have or are hitting bottom. Hitting bottom can mean a ton of different experiences - hitting bottom can mean losing a job, losing a loved one, losing "everything". In the world we live it's no wonder this is happening.

So now what? What does it take to get off the bottom? If you are someone who has hit bottom please comment below.

Getting off the bottom has as many solutions as there are people. The thing that resonates with me is not the falling but the "getting up." What does it take to get back up, to step into what's next, what will be different this time (because some people have been on the bottom more than once).

The challenge of getting up is it can feel overwhelming, not able to see into the future, a person can feel defeated, worthless. I definitely know what that looks and feels like. It's a challenge to believe in yourself enough to take action. The voice in your head says all kinds of things that will keep you stuck on the bottom. You know that voice - right?

The voice that says "you will fail again because you always do", "you aren't smart enough of worthy enough", "you don't have the experiences or tools to succeed," That's the voice that only wants to keep you safe from yourself. That voice is not your friend - this voice is NOT here to help you to move forward and upward.

9 steps to getting off the bottom:

1. Decide to get started

2. Create a plan (baby steps)

3. Engage with positive people

4. Make a list of all of your skills

5. Exercise - changes your moods

6. Pay attention to your diet

7. Read books of people who have been where you are - they're out there

8. Write down your success as you move up

9. One step at a time, one day at a time, one minute at a time will get you off the bottom!

Lovely post. I think a lot of us have hit the bottom. I know I did for a few years . But as they say, it’s not the falling over that counts, it’s the getting back up.
Thanks
Stephen

First, you have to be willing to get up.

Then ask for help.

The help is there waiting for you to be willing to ask for it.

Then make a plan, create a foundation to strengthen your resolve to prevent you from falling again.

Let the anger pass, recognize your own part of the equation and move forward one step at a time.

I've been at the bottom many times and sometimes longer than I liked.
Success always has its failures along the way, they're lessons learned.
Picking up the pieces and starting over is the only solution I know.

Great Post.

Great insight John!

This is an awesome post! I really enjoyed reading it. I’ve definitely hit bottom several times and been through some tough times. I tend to completely shut myself off from everyone and everything.

That list of getting off rock bottom really helps with confidence and getting through change.

Thanks for sharing!
