Starting anything new is a challenge. Mostly because you have no idea if this endeavor will be successful or cause you even more pain. When trying to wrap your head around the concept of internet marketing it can get overwhelming, quickly. What does internet marketing entail? Basically it is commissioned sales that doesn't require cold calling, expensive brochures or even business cards. It allows one to promote a product (or more likely products) and receive a commission when someone purchases said product by clicking through your website. How does this happen? Well it is really a numbers game. The more visitors you have, the more clicks you can possibly get and ultimately the more sales that can be generated. This is the boilerplate explanation you will hear from countless individuals and get rich quick opportunities (more than likely scams but that is another post :) ). There are so many other things you must consider. What to promote? What makes one website stand out and convert where others never generate a single sale? How do you select a profitable niche? Are all niches profitable? What about competition? How do I stand out and get the all elusive traffic to my website? At the end of the day will I actually make any money?

These are the questions that rarely get answered. For most of it you are on your own but with sites like Wealthy Affiliate you can get help. Picking a niche is probably the biggest stumbling block. Usually you are told to pick something you know, are passionate about and would like to learn more about. For instance, my passion is music technology. So how does this translate into a marketable niche? Keyword research is definitely the first stop but then you have to find a problem that needs to be solved. For instance, with the expense of amplifiers being what they are a lot of people interested in recording guitars and even live performance have turned to amplifier simulators. There are all kinds of products for this very problem. Where do you go to find products to promote? Amazon is usually the first stop but there is a better way. If you have any interest at all in music whether it is guitars, basses, keyboards or kazoos you will already know several websites that sell these very products and surprise, surprise most of these sites (which are just giant online catalogs focused on musical instruments and accessories) have their own affiliate program. Very convenient. Just make sure you read up on the sites so that you are recommending one you would use or hopefully would have used in the past.
