Two quick questions about SEO and permalinks
1. If i am targeting the search term "gift ideas dog lovers" will i also qualify for the term "gift ideas for dog lovers"?
2. If i change my post title to something seasonally specific, my permalink will also change. Do I just need to fetch as google again to get the post indexed? Or is there more to this process?

1. Yes
2. You can change your post title without changing your Permalink.
As a matter of fact, I would NOT change the permalink or, as you guessed it, it will break the current indexed links and visitors can receive 404-not found errors.
Additionally, I don't recommend doing a "fetch as google" on every single post. I only do this on the first couple of articles for a new website - that's it.
Some experts believe Google will see this as an effort to try and force your links and might very well devalue you in the search rankings.
PJ,
I appreciate all the knowledge you have provided me, as well as the rest if this community. Do you still recommend not fetching as google if a page hasnt been indexed after say a week or two?
On a totally different subject, I noticed that you have a lot of twitter followers. I believe you are using Hootsuite or buffer to manage your social media profiles (i dont remember which). I'm assuming you must turn off email notifications for retweets, likes etc...i can't imagine how overwhelming the social sites like twitter would become otherwise. Lastly, do you have a method for accumulating that many twitter followers, or do you simply add anyone you encounter on twitter?
After a new article post on my blog, I do a lot of social sharing. The links that are then shared on the social platforms get crawled by the search engines rapidly. Much more than our individual sites, of course. So, indexing should happen quick. I highly recommend this procedure if you want fast indexing.
Yes, I use Hootsuite and it has helped my follower count tremendously as I'm able to schedule posting 24/7. And, OH Yea, I definitely turn off email notifications! LOL!
