Hello Sam here...last night while doing some research for voice over content I came across and article that got me this is going to be about building your website to make it more available to handicap people.

There are billions of people on the planet, but you see them around all the time, some of them maybe blind, their are others who are deaf, perhaps they are confined to a wheel chair, or have an amputee limb.

As I was writing about being a voice over artist, I realized that we're here to help people, I wanted to ask you a question that I had asked myself Is my website accessible to people with disabilities.

Five Core Steps to help

In this world filled with people that come in all shapes and sizes, and different abilities along with some very exceptional skills about 15% of the world's population is handicapped.

Now...what can I do to help when I'm just barely trying to get my Google Analytics to work right lol. Hold up research...so I found a couple of experts which gave me about six core concepts to help me with my website.

The good news I own my own site means I'm going to have to do a few slight tweaks, to my web pages (and Images) to get out of the dark ages.

This article will help to:

  • Learn about WCA Guide Lines (Web Content Accessibility)
  • Understanding these six core skills would mean including alt text for images and improving your websites access ability.
  • Figuring out what a screen reader is and why they work
  • I want to show you some ways that websites are missing out on some great accessible web tools.
  • Now with a handful of tools and some evaluation you could make your website great!

Web Content Access Principles

How would you

like to be able to have the principles needed to separate yourself from the rest of the competition, by a standard that developers and designers will gravitate to.

There are two places where you can go that can help you in this area of crafting an all accessible website.

The first one is already listed above so here's the second one, It's important not only to make our websites great, on a local level, since our sites are global lets do International to.

Six Core Skills Needed

So what are these six skills...before we dig in I would like you to meet someone he's cool and one of the many reasons why he's in this article with me too.

His name is Phil Kragnes, his skills include being a manager of computer accommodations, but him and his team developed a great website Called Accessible U.

Together him and his team created six core skills that makes what I'd like to think of as a real cool accessible website, so If you would like a front row seat here they are:

  1. Headings and Document Structure
  2. Hyperlinks
  3. Video Captions
  4. Bullets and Numbered Lists
  5. Color and Contrast
  6. Image Alternative Text
    About Phil

Phil is very cool with a degree in Cognitive Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University, a Masters of Experimental Psychology: Human Memory, Learning and Cognition from the University of New Mexico and he taught himself HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery.

He also lost his vision from diabetes in high school and is a double amputee below the knee.

Phil has more than overcome the challenges, by personal experience and for 20yrs been traveling around the world teaching developers, and content websites how to be website accessible for people with disabilities.

    Compliance Does Not Equal Accessibility

Phil says that even he can create a website with great content that is just enough to meet the guidelines...I can even make a page the complies with the WAGC standards that is not usable or access able.

Compliance is not just about being accessible, But if you create a site that is accessible you will be compliant.

It's really easy to do...that's what is great about it, but the only issue is that no one feels it needs to be done.

    Accessible Rich Internet Applications

Now that I've given you a walk though of the 6 core steps listed above, I'd like to give you a few other applications you can find on the Internet that are available to help you create a more accessible website... If you have noticed the headline above ARIA is an Internet site.

This site also help to make website more useful for advanced content. It lets users extend HTML, add new attributes and more.

Aria, works primarily with widgets that are non-standard it also helps when using, controls, such as (e.g. sliders, tree widgets, grids of data, spreadsheets, complex menus, tab panels, etc).

Mastering ARIA’s widgets and controls will give your users a great experience with your page.

    Screen Readers

Okay... Now before I started this article, I wanted to give you a blog about the issue I am having with my Google Analytics!, But aside from that I wanted to solve that problem first, then when I put it down I wanted to write a post for my voice over website and it took me here.

So...what is a screen reader, in short... It's a software program that's able to integrate any computer that uses a (Mac, iOS devices, Windows, etc) system.

A screen reader converts text to speech and provides a voice over that is computer based in quality and sound, It also reads and scans web pages.

    Common web accessibility mistakes

Jared is another expert in the field, of computer web access ability, he also has spent 20 yrs teaching web developers how to make their website more user-friendly, with a Masters Degree in Instructional Technology, Jared and Phil both agree that while it may seem like a lack of resources.

The real issue is a lack of education, and a miss use of technology, their are common mistakes that can be found and listed when it comes to website that are created their are to many to list in this article.

So instead I will give you a tool from WebAim that will be able to help web developers, webmasters, authors and content writers make your website more accessible to users, it's called wave.

Now that we've gone over Screen reader, a few common mistakes when it comes to making your website accessible to people who may have a few disabilities, I shared with you Internet applications, compliance issues and 6 core skills needed is their more?

      Hanco.

Thanks, much love back to you, and for the comment.
For me when it comes to disability I find that it's just the opposite because those I've met along the way not only do they become very exceptional in the things that seem impossible or challenging even for me, but I love how they surprise even me!!!!

      Sincerely,
      Samuel
