I used to think target audience just meant everyone that is interested. Yeah I was wrong- it's about how you reach out based on your tone of voice. Think about how you would like to be spoken to.
I unlearned this and now, I am learning to simplify how you can understand your target audience better.
Step 1: Get specific (like… uncomfortably specific)
Instead of saying: "People who like content writing". Think about the following questions:
- Who are they?
- What stage are they in?
- What are they struggling with right now?
Because a business content writer and a business owner hiring a writer ? Completely different people.
Step 2: Understand their problems, not just their interests
This was a big shift for me. People just don't follow content because they like it. Because it helps them:

- Solve a problem.
- Learn something new.
- Feel understood.
- Get inspired.
I ask myself what do they get stuck on? That is the question that changes how I create my content.
Step 3: Observe how they behave online
Instead of guessing, I have been paying attention to the following:
- What kind of posts do they engage with?
- Do they prefer short content or deep dives?
- Are they commenting, saving or just scrolling.
Because what people say they like and what they actually engage with is very different.
Step 4: Speak their language
This one hit me hard. If my content sounds like me trying to sound smart instead of me trying to sound understood, I lose them.
So now I focus on:
- Simple wording.
- Real life examples.
- Talking like a human, not a textbook.
Conclusion
Your audience isn't just a category. It's real people with real thoughts , doubts and habits. I'm realizing that the better I understand my audience, the easier content ideas become and it starts to feel more natural
