Well, I'm still confused about all this but I did learn something about a pingback and I think I might understand a little. Thanks for bringing up this topic. I will know what it is when it happens.
This is caused by your internal linking and is nothing to be concerned about. I get these pingbacks all the time whenever I reference another one of my previous articles in a current post. You can approve or delete, but again, nothing to be concerned about. All the best!

wow, that is strange. I've never seen it but the others here I guess have. I've never heard of a pingback. I would have been confused too!

When you link 1 of your pages to another page on your own site, it creates a pingback. But not every time which makes it even more confusing :)
You must be doing a lot of internal linking (which is not a bad thing) but you will get a lot of these pingbacks :)

They are probably track backs and ping backs. It's like your site talking to itself. I usually get rid of them, but let's see what others say first.

You don't really need a plugin. You can stop self-pinging by using the relative URL instead of the full URL when internal linking.
So instead of internal linking to
http://yoursite.com/full-name-of-post
Simply link to the extension only:
/full-name-of-post/
This should stop self pings. Test it to see if it works for you.
In addition, I do not allow pingbacks and trackbacks because the majority are spam and it stops getting a bunch of poor quality backlinks.
In WP >Settings >Discussions, in the selection at the top of the page, where it says "do not allow linkbacks or trackbacks from other blogs", if you don't want trackback spam, you can uncheck that option.

They are persistent! Software has been developed to target blogs and has been around for some time. I've noticed my spam targets one particular post on my website. It can even fill out the captcha info. It's a backlink software program.
Most of them are auto bots, not humans. Sadly, there are services that will pay human spammers .001 cents or some small amount like that per spam post. ~Jude

There should already be things set up in Akisment to help block these spams, you may want to check the settings.

A combination of CAPTCHA, Askimet and the native comment controls can really cut down the spam.
They are fishing, hoping you click on their website. Akismet suppose to block if URL is in message
I don't think they're particularly picky about which site they land on. I have five different sites and I've seen the same crapola on all of them. The sites are totally different, too. I'm sure they have software geared to leave bulk comments on as many sites as possible. Yes, they are real people, but technology is available to allow them to do this easily.
