write v. edit

I've been reading about writing. I'm real word-nerd. :D

I'm a perfectionist and a procrastinator. I can put off near-perfect accomplishments eternally.

Here are some things I picked up that were EXTREMELY helpful!

Write first and edit later. Wear your writer's hat first, then change hats! I've always edited as I went, constantly changing what I just said, and never getting my point across as clearly as the thought came to me. I learned I need to write, write, write, maybe don't even look at the monitor, just write. Then, when I'm done, change modes, maybe get up from the computer and come back later to edit, maybe even wear an actual hat for editing (I'm imagining that green visor the card dealers wear in old casino flicks.)

Make an EDIT list. Write out a list of things to check when editing. This will keep me focused on editing what I just wrote and not let me keeping adding content. I could probably just keep adding a bit here and there until I have spent my life polishing one single article. A list of editing tasks will keep my thoughts on editing what is already written and help me complete editing.

Thanks for reading! I hope it helps! Do you think it might? Can you give me any writing or editing tips?

When I was at Community College, I had an English professor who really stressed writing and then editing. He would make us write for 15-20 minutes nonstop and THEN edit. It is a better use of time.

That's a great strategy. I have been incorporating a timer in my life to keep me on task and to prevent myself from spending too long on anything. I should use it when I write too. It very well could help to keep me focused on just writing or editing.
Thank you for your feedback, very helpful!

This is pretty interesting to be honest I actually think this would work well. This is because I know with me I do the same thing sometimes I will, edit as I go and then I see something I don't like change it then keep doing it. A lot of time was spent on it all, waiting until the end of the post then editing it is better. Thanks for the share and I believe it will help others. I hope the best for you and your goals and you achieve everything you want to.

Thanks for your comment.
It's so easy to go back and reread and rewrite the last sentence over and over. Then, in the polishing, I forget where I was going next, ya know. But to lay out all out, like a stream of consciousness first,... can you imagine the places your mind might go?! We might be able to easily get a couple hundred more words!

This is so true your mind can go far if we didn't get distracted by editing and things like that. I know what you mean by you can lose track of where you are going when editing along the way, it can be a little frustrating. It is kind of crazy to think about it and know that, just by non stop writing you could put out more content or words then if you were to stop and edit every now and then.

Thanks, Matt! You really know what I mean.
