$1,008.20 earned yesterday from 1 program. (+3 INSIGHTS!)
As Grace said in her great 4-year WAnniversary post, sharing this kind of proof gives members here a boost of inspiration and motivation.
Therefore, I decided to share this with you to give a small motivational boost for your new week.
I also want to share with you a couple of insights to make you ponder a little bit of your affiliate marketing business.
Yesterday I wanted to check the commissions this program has paid me recently to stay on track. As far as I can remember, almost the only thing that I have done to promote this program in the last 3 months is just to post 1 video about it and send 1 email for my list so that people would watch that video. That's all.
But previously I've created content that still keeps on bearing fruits and that's the beauty of affiliate marketing. The work you do today will often bring you rewards for months and years to come.
After logging in, I saw the following number and I was positively surprised:

3 Things It Made Me Ponder...
First of all, that number was accrued out of 3 commissions and one of them was a high ticket sale that made me $1,000.
This is not a post to tell you to start promoting high ticket offers but just to ponder a little bit...
1. Are You Using Your Time Right?
Let's say that you are promoting currently 10 different products/companies as an affiliate.
Out of 100 hours, you are putting 10 hours for promoting each product.
Now take a look back and analyze how much reward are you getting based on each hour that you are using.
Of course, in real life it may not always be so straightforward to measure because there are many different variables but by analyzing your actions and results a little bit you can usually get some idea of what's working and what is not working.
Let me give you an example...
I help people to make money online on my YouTube channel and blog and I show different options. At one stage, I was showing that people can make money with matched betting. I created a couple of blog posts and YouTube videos.
However, very few people responded to that poorly probably for 3 reasons:
1) Most matched betting offers were only available in the UK.
2) Matched betting requires some capital to get started and perhaps my audience didn't have that.
3) Perhaps they just didn't understand the concept well enough. It would have required more effort from my part to explain it even better.
I could have done #3 and explain people more but based on my early results, I realized it wasn't the right thing to do because it wasn't the right thing that my audience needed. So, I stopped creating content about matched betting.
On the other hand, people have responded better to some other things and I've started doing that more.
In the same way, I challenge you to analyze your efforts and results.
Are there some affiliate offers that your audience is responding especially well?
Is there some affiliate program that is providing better results than other ones?
Are there some offers that you've been promoting but your audience doesn't respond well and it isn't giving good results?
This can help you to shift your focus and double down on things that work well. This thought process "activated" in my mind since I realized how good results this one program has been giving with the old work I've done and I haven't put almost any effort promoting it recently.
2. Things That You Probably Shouldn't Promote with 100% Effort...
My first website ever was about positive thinking and lifestyle. Unfortunately, I let that website vanish and didn't renew the yearly domain name fee so I can't look back at it anymore. I should have kept it but it's now gone...
Anyways, because it was my first ever website I didn't know well how affiliate marketing works.
Back then I was also very frugal and I didn't spend money literally on anything useless. Only on things that were almost 100% necessary for life, such as food, living, education, etc. I could have spent but I wanted to save rather than waste my money.
However, that mindset also gave me challenges to promote anything to other people because I was thinking, "If I wouldn't spend money on this product myself, how could I promote it to others?"
When looking back that was obviously very limited thinking. There are almost 8 billion people on the planet and we are different. Even if I wouldn't need it, for example, an ice hockey stick it doesn't mean that an ice hockey player wouldn't need it.
Or if I wouldn't need a new camera, it doesn't mean that a professional photographer wouldn't need it.
You get the point, right? You don't need to use all the products yourself that you promote. In fact, trying to use all the products that you promote will probably limit your business and impact in the long run.
Anyways... Because of that limited thinking I felt comfortable promoting books because I knew that people wouldn't need to spend a lot of money on buying them but they could give them extraordinary returns in terms of knowledge and wisdom for just a few dollars.
But now comes a big challenge...
If you promote a book that costs $10 on Amazon and it gives you a 4% commission (nowadays probably even less), you'll earn only $0.40 per one book sale.
Let's say that you'd want to earn $1,000... Can you guess how many books you'd need to sell?
2,500 books! You'd need 2,500 sales!
In the other words, you'd need 2,500 people to do the following procedure:
1. Come to your post.
2. Click your affiliate link.
3. Click "Buy".
4. Pull out their credit card and fill out all the information.
5. Click "Confirm purchase".
2,500 times...
And that would just make $1,000.
So, you'd need to make that 10,000 times a month to make even $4,000/month income which is a median salary in some Western countries.
Can you imagine how hard is it would be to sell 10,000 books per month? Super hard. I can't even imagine how much effort it would require.
In a nutshell, if you want to make a living with affiliate marketing, don't focus on promoting books. Promoting books as an affiliate is almost never worth it if we measure in money.
Of course, there may be other values such as impacting people in a positive way. supporting your favorite author or ideology but if you need to get food on your table, you will not do it by promoting books as an affiliate.
Books are just one example of extremely low ticket products. But you should consider this thing when you consider promoting something that pays tiny commissions.
Yes, it's possible to make money with low ticket offers. Nathaniell once shared that his VPN promos are making an extra $1,500 Per Month from $1 Recurring Commissions.
So, I'm not saying to abandon low ticket offers.
All I'm saying is that if you need some food on the table, you might want to compare whether you wanna make 2,500 book sales per month or 1 affiliate sale from a high ticket program that gives you the same financial results.
Then to the last point...
3. Provide an Alternative
When you create content, you'll most likely have different kinds of people in your audience. Some followers have more money to invest and some people less. Some people are young, some are old. Some live in the US, some in Europe, some Asia and some in Africa.
If you are promoting an offer that isn't available for everyone's needs, you may want to offer an alternative.
For example, if you're promoting a high ticket offer that costs $3,000 per purchase, most people probably will not have that kind of money at their hands.
What about looking for a product that is much cheaper and show that one too?
Or if a certain offer is only available for the people in the US, you can say, "If you are outside of the US, then I still have this solution for you."
Of course, doing this isn't 100% necessary because you can decide who you'll want to serve with your work.
But providing a good alternative can in many cases give you great results with small efforts. You'll help more people to get what they need and you earn affiliate commissions as well.
It's Your Time!

PS. Now I'd love to hear from you.
Are you checking your numbers regularly to see what is giving you results?
What do you think about promoting low ticket (cheap) vs high ticket (expensive) products?

I think that you can promote low-ticket items, but it takes a lot of effort to make it work. For instance, I caneasily promote Think and Graw Rich, but I would be blogging with long-tail keywords for a good few months.
The other way to make good money is to write your own book or record your own program and promote that.
The bottom line is that you can promote low ticket, but it takes a good bit of effort where high ticket doesn't take as much effort.
I personally think the product price matters less than serving your reader the best product. I would always recommend low or high the best solution to the trouble they face but I know for a fact it is no harder totarget people with money than those without. High End Retailers do it all the time.
I have only dropped products that turned out to be stinkers or were seriously outdated after time. I still have a couple old products on site that get traffic and occasional sales years after I promoted them.
Hi Roope,
Great post! I agree that promoting high quality product that is attractively priced is key. Your reputation and trust is directly related to what you promote. It doesn’t make sense to write an awesome post and pair it with a low quality or useless item. People are not stupid and you will never be successful in the long run unless you have their best interest in mind. The commissions on Amazon are ridiculous but I like to throw an item in a post now and again if I really think it can help someone and it relates well to my content.

I haven't gone near my gardening site for some time. I found that most products that I sold only made me around 40 cents to $1 commision. Even if I reviewed items such as mowers that could make me around $10 people would click on it and buy a $20 item that made me about 60 cents.
I haven't abandoned the site but I do intend to utilise it differently.
I am also venturing into other areas to see what works best for me
I have plenty of ideas but, being in constant pain has slowed me down. Jim
I see. 40 cents to $1 commissions do sound small as you explain. I'd probably look for higher ticket items within that niche that would still have good reviews.
I'm really sorry to hear about your pain. I hope it goes away.

Thank you for the very awesome article! That was quite a gem of information. I had to update a few notes, lol
I definitely have OCD when it comes to statistics, I have spreadsheets that I use for notes, journal and to compare stats with google search console. I love seeing how my site is doing compared with what I have done as far as posting, sharing, commenting.
I prefer the mid range ticket items mixed with some bigger ticket items. I plan on having quite a few of both, so eventually it will help overall.
I haven't been alive long enough to stop promoting anything. Hopefully those days wont come anytime soon. Hehehe
Thanks for all that awesome info!
