White House: Internet sales tax ‘will level the playing field’

The White House Monday backed a Senate bill to force online retailers like Amazon and eBay to collect state and local sales taxes, hoping to end a cost disadvantage hampering bricks and mortar businesses.

The bill, which was being debated in the Senate on Monday, could lead to the recouping of $11 billion in lost annual sales taxes, according to a University of Tennessee research study...

The Act would require Internet and remote retailers to collect state sales taxes no matter where they are located when a transaction takes place, and advocates hope it would ease budget problems in many cash-strapped states.

Opponents of the Act say it would still be unfair because retailers in a state which has no sales tax would still be liable to collect tax on purchases made in distant states which do have sales taxes.

They say the measure would also harm smaller online retailers as big firms like Amazon and WalMart can more easily absorb the impact of the new sales tax.

If major banks headquartered in Delaware, USA are not taxed; why should the real people's labor be taxed? Look at every US Bank...they are headquartered in tax free state of Delaware. Look on any map and see if you can locate "state of" NJ, DE, VA, NY etc... I think it is sad most people have no clue where the tax money really goes. Look up who..."we the people" are in the Constitution. And why hasn't the Private Federal Reserve Bank never been audited? Give on to Caesars what is Caesars. One of the best resources to see why internet should be tax exempt is on YouTube channel: Winston Shrout 2013.

I can't believe this discussion is still going on. Tax is tax. Everyone should collect it. As long as there are taxes everyone should be liable for them. Do it across the board and there is no longer a discussion or a reason to exclude affiliates. Just make sure the affiliate isn't charged the tax. We are not providing the product, the manufacturer is.

Some manufacturers like Amazon have already "fired" affiliates in the states that have tried to collect the tax. And since those affiliates will consequently be paying less income tax on the back end, the state gets less tax revenue anyway.

I agree Craig, well said.
