Dmoz dot org?
Not sure why we haven't discussed DMOZ too much here. I just watched a video from a Google Guru at http://bit.ly/1EMVRRb and it's still highly relevant. A little side story. I went to work for an E-Commerce venture for an online Fragrance outlet. Actually the owner had started at a local flea market and worked his way up to owning the strip mall and a perfume shoppe within the strip mall. By then he was in his late 50's and had little knowledge of online business. His son an aspiring film video producer in LA hired me to help his Dad out here in Tampa with the online perfume business. His Dad was more knowledgeable about PCs than his son thought as he had been using the POS from Microsoft to run his cash registers so it took a little bit of knowledge to use them. He however was misguided about many things about E-Commerce etc. He had a huge fear his website going live without it being 100% to his liking. I was working on the project, taking product photos and uploading them to the webstore. My boss was afraid of submitting the URL to the DMOZ. I knew from experience if they are going to allow you into the directory at all it's going to take about 3 to 6 months. So I submitted him anyway while we were still working on the website. Well just about the day we opened doors we had a sale immediately. My boss shook his head and said "how can that be?" I told him, "look I took the opportunity to submit you before you were ready as I know from experience how long it could take. The timing just happened to work out perfectly, no special magic from me" From what I've read on the Web it's a very convented position to be in. I'm a bit surprised it isn't been preached here or on the latest "Google Ranking" video. I intend to submit the rest of my sites today to it. Try it dmoz.org! - Yours Dan

Dmoz was more useful in terms of rankings when backlinks were more meaningful within the search algorithms. They have been phased out and yes, having inclusion within the DMOZ directory can have some value but at the end of the day, it will offer minimal results compared to the actual content you create on your website and the on-site engagement you get.
That blog post is back from 2011 when relevant backlinks had much more value, Google generally speaking has set a zero net value to backlinks and chances are very good this author was hit in a very adverse way with a Google Panda or Penguin update.
