The Cost of Freedom

I recently recovered a poem I wrote in honor of D-Day, which I realize is past now, but the sentiment is still valid. With the barometer of our nation's patriotism reaching epic heights, I thought that I'd include this to allow people to recall what our FREEDOM really costs.

By the dark of the moon, On the 5th of June, The fleet neared the beaches.

With mornings light, The Allies fight, Put victory within their reaches.

Marines and more, Took to the shores, A date that will ever be remembered.

The Axis hold, the world was told, The Nazis not so bold,

Did soon turn cold, their grip now forever severed.

To those who died, Our country cried, Let us NEVER forget,

The sacrifice, and great price, a life we enjoy yet,

Of freedom to our future, yet only a few delivered.

A world of peace, within our reach,

The price paid for each, sought to teach.

That freedom has a cost, in lives lost,

In hopes that WE would see,

Those that died, and those that cried,

Because FREEDOM isn’t FREE.

I've shared this not to stir any political pots or start any type of split in the world democratically, but to remind those of us in the US that what we take for granted each day is more than we could ever hope to repay to the men and women of our services that have given their all to this country when it called upon them. Thank you one and all for that sacrifice.

I thank the military, Robert. Those who gave their "ultimate sacrafice will always, in my mind, to be my heroes.

No politics there, just gratitude Robert.

Thanks for the post, we all need to be reminded of the actions taken by men and woman who serve this great nation.

Mahalo!

Thanks for sharing, Robert.

Hear hear

Spoken like a man who's been there to know the reason I posted it. I have a lot of friends that never came back from places like Viet Nam, Korea, Iraq, Iran, and Cambodia, Laos, and dozens of other places we've sent them to serve in our stead. IF you are one who served, let me be the next one to say THANK YOU for that portion of your life that you've given to me to allow me to write here and not worry about police coming and dragging me to jail or worse for something I've said or written.

I have served - yes. But for my country Rhodesia way back when the world believed we were evil and decided that handing the place over to the despot Mugabe was the right thing to do.
History tells us otherwise but the clock cannot be wound back ...
Lots of lives lost for nothing.
But there you go - it certainly doesn't diminish the fact that those who sacrificed did it for a good and noble cause.

History, my friend, is written by the victor. YOU have personally experienced the horrors of war, know firsthand the tortures of loss and separation of all you hold dear in life.
I made no distinction of a country in my statement. I love that here in this country we are free to make choices. Good, bad or otherwise. Mostly otherwise it seems. YOU have seen the bad parts as the war you fought in was unpopular. Tyranny isn't unique, but exactly the opposite, as most common. Men will have their own will no matter the land or its people.
What interests me now is how long have you been here and what brought you here? Were you a refugee or did you become a naturalized citizen once here? I can see the story unfolding now and I think it would make an excellent book for you to share with others. That's also the niche I work in and would love to be able to help you with that possible book. if you'd like, set down and put some words to it and I'd be glad to look it over and give you an evaluation of possible content or marketability.
