Staying Quiet Inside Wealthy Affiliate Cost Me More Than Asking Ever Did

I’ve only recently become fully active again inside Wealthy Affiliate. I’ve always been a member, just not with enough time to commit fully as I did in the beginning. One thing that has really stood out as I’ve immersed myself again is how many new members there seem to be. As I come across joining dates, ranking numbers, and the types of questions being asked, it certainly looks that way.

It reminded me of how I started out, and of a few mistakes I made early on that cost me time and money. Not failures exactly, just avoidable mistakes. That’s why I’m sharing this now.

When I first joined Wealthy Affiliate, I didn’t ask many questions.

Not because I didn’t have them, but because I didn’t want to sound ignorant. And yes, a bit of male stubbornness too.

Affiliate terms and other phrases being fired at me felt like another language. People seemed confident, technical, and already up to speed. I assumed that if I asked something too basic, it might reflect badly on me. You know, first impressions last. So instead of asking, I stayed quiet and tried to work things out on my own.

Looking back, that silence cost me more than asking ever would have.

By not using the community properly early on, I wasted time going down the wrong paths. I bought plugins or upgrades I didn’t really need. I overcomplicated things that could have been kept simple. The answers were often just a quick “ask a question” post away. I just wasn’t asking the questions.

Intro to AI

What’s interesting is that I did exactly the same thing again when people started recommending tools like ChatGPT.

Even though others were saying how useful it was, I hesitated for a good six to eight months. Part of it was uncertainty. Part of it was embarrassment. Everyone else seemed to “get it” already, and once again I didn’t want to look like the one lagging behind, especially as I didn’t really know what it was or what it was capable of. Now, I would be lost without it or one of the other major platforms.

Eventually, I gave in and started using it, and yes, it helped tremendously. There is a learning curve and constant learning involved. But what I realised quite quickly is this: AI can answer many general questions, but it does not replace the hands-on Wealthy Affiliate community.

AI doesn’t know your site history, your niche decisions, or how WA actually works in practice. Many of the most important questions people struggle with are WA-specific, and those answers still come from real experience, shared by real members. Several members said, in one way or another, that no question is silly if you don’t know the answer.

My Turning Point

The turning point for me wasn’t just using better tools. It was somewhere along the learning curve, finally getting comfortable asking questions, even if they felt basic at the time.

As I’ve explored the site since returning, and as it is now a totally different landscape, it seems the new look and elements of the site actually encourage everyone to engage with each other. I think that is another great improvement.

If you’re newer here and this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And if you’ve been around a while and recognise parts of this from your own early days, it would be great to hear your perspective. That kind of shared experience is what really strengthens this community.

Great to be back.

I was also very hesitant to ask questions. I think my first 2 or 3 months here I might have asked just 2 questions. Still, after 10 months here, my questions are only around 12 or 13 questions. I also was hesitant to ask ChatGPT and Perplexity questions but now I do a lot. It helps.

Hi Michael,
Its bound t be lower as most of us ask AI for at least some now☺ because nobody else can see or questions

I relate to this so much. I've been silently doing my thing in the background for years for many reasons. I've been putting myself out there a lot more these past few months. I value the community very much. I know that I have something to offer and it's important to do that here but I need to get over the imposter syndrome.

Have a good rest of the week, Rob.

Hey Rob,
I identify with that sentiment, staying quiet. i did that for a longtime, in some cases still do.. But the reality is that it doesn't work and it hinders my progress. I have many questions which my mind considers trivial and nonsensical.
But guess what I will be asking those questions as I go forwards, because not asking them stunts and slows down my progress to a lucrative online business.
Just saying ^_^

This from someone's whose life motto is 'ask for what you want the most you can get is a NO. Cheers

This really resonates, Rob. The value of WA has always been the people behind it the shared experience, the willingness to help, and the reminder that no question is too small. Getting comfortable asking questions truly is a turning point. I also agree the new layout encourages more connection, which is a great step forward. Welcome back great to have you here.

Its even more entertaining here now with the interactions.

Hi Rob,
Yes, I agree! The interactions are making it even more engaging and fun.

Hi All, I just want to reiterate that just because many of us now use one form or another of AI, that asking questions from members with hands on experience nearly always beats AI for WA related questions. AI has given me many wrong answers in that field of enquiry

It does, Rob. I didn't mean to imply that it doesn't.

But, Chatty, I and Site Support usually get it figured out.
