Same Storm, Different Boats
I have heard some people say that we are all in the same boat, but in my opinion that’s not the case.
We are sailing in the same worldwide storm of coronavirus, but not in the same boat. Our boats range from flimsy rafts all the way through to luxury liners, my vessel could be shipwrecked and yours might not be. Or vice versa.
For some quarantine is marvellous, a moment of reflection, of re-connection, taking it easy with a cocktail or coffee and enjoying tranquillity.
For me I've had more time than I might have had to aquaint myself with the WA platform and community. I am truly delighted by the level of help and advice which is freely available.
For others this is a desperate financial or family crisis, or indeed both.
For some that live alone they're facing endless loneliness, particularly those who don’t know how to send an email or access the internet.
While for others it is peace, rest, time with their mother, father, sons or daughters.
Some are bringing in extra money with endless overtime.
Others are working more hours for less money due to pay cuts or loss in sales.
Still others no longer have a job as a result of the virus.
Some families of 4 will receive a generous monthly benefit from the stimulus while other families of 4 will see zero income for the duration of it.
Some were concerned about getting a certain chocolate for Easter while others were concerned whether there would be enough bread, milk and eggs for the weekend.
Some want to go back to work because they don't qualify for unemployment and are running out of money.
Others want to kill those who break the quarantine and are seen outside.
Some have experienced the near death of the virus, some have already lost someone from it and some are not sure if their loved ones are going to make it.
Others don't believe this is a big deal. Some have faith and can cope admirably. Others say the worst is yet to come.
So, friends, we are not in the same boat. We are going through a time when our perceptions and needs are completely different. Be ready to offer assistance and encouragement to other boats because together we are stronger, more capable of coping with adversity when others are cheering us on.
Each of us will emerge, in our own way, from this storm.
It is vital to see beyond what is seen at first glance. Not just looking but taking an interest on our fellows and actually seeing.
We are all on different vessels during this storm experiencing a very different journey so try not to judge others by what's happening in your boat, we are all just fighting our way through this storm. Some have less faith in the future than others!

Funny you should bring this to everyone's attention. I just did the same thing with a friend.
I'm doing fine -- like you, taking more time with WA. However, I observe people with no money worries stating how selfish people are for wanting things to open up so they can get back to work. I've BEEN on this end of the spectrum so I understand that perspective very well.
I love this analogy and glad you didn't just keep it a private conversation. It can open eyes.

Thanks Debbi
I'm so pleased this situation didn't arise when I was twenty five years younger.
For one thing, it's great to have better technology to stay in touch than we had a quarter of a century ago, but also, I have a great deal more empathy than I had then.
Stay safe and well

Hi Rick, awesome post. I too believe that we may be in similar waters but we are in different boats. These are stormy seas and we must choose our vessels well. How we handle the situations we are faced with will determine how well we ride out our different storms.
Best wishes,
Michael

Wonderful post and very true.
Some days by boat seems to be wedged against the rock, whilst others it is merely drifting along the waves and occasionally the motor is running and I'm going full speed here at WA.
I do believe that most people will come out of this nightmare with a very different perspective on life! I wonder how long the change will effect people or whether they will simply go back into their old lifestyle and ways of thinking.
Thanks Lawrence
Like you, I wonder how long any changed perspective will last.
I remember hearing that where history is concerned we learn the dates, we learn the names of those involved but we don't learn the lessons.
Stay safe and well
