📜 Ancient Origins
- Egypt (c. 3000 BCE) — The earliest record of a “birthday” comes from the pharaohs who celebrated the anniversary of their coronation, not their bellybutton birth. This marked their “birth as a god.”
- Ancient Greece (c. 400 BCE) — Greeks offered moon-shaped cakes to Artemis, goddess of the moon, and added candles to symbolise her light. Some scholars believe this inspired the modern tradition of cake and candles.
- Ancient Rome — Ordinary Roman citizens celebrated birthdays (for men only at first). The Roman calendar included public holidays for the birthdays of emperors and gods.
- Christianity (later) — Early Christians actually rejected birthday celebrations as pagan. Only in the 4th century did they start marking Jesus’ birthday as Christmas. It was decided he was born on December 25.
🎉 Modern Birthday Culture
- In Europe, birthday parties became more common among the upper classes during the Renaissance period, partly influenced by astrology — your birth date was thought to reveal your fate.
- By the 18th and 19th centuries, as childhood came to be seen as a special phase of life (rather than just preparation for adulthood), children’s birthday parties (“Kinderfeste” in Germany) became popular.
- The Industrial Revolution made cakes, cards, and decorations more affordable to ordinary people — and the custom spread widely through Europe and North America.
- The emphasis on the individual and personal happiness grew stronger in the 20th century, reinforcing the cultural importance of birthdays.
