Structure, discipline and... comedy??
After just a week on WA I seem to have had more progress that an entire year of trying to build my website up on my own. Admittedly, my previous business plan was following the business plan of the underpants gnomes from south park; of put up website - do nothing - gain profit, but now that I've learnt a lot more about SEO-ing articles and keyword research the results seem to be speaking for themselves and I'm excited to see how they improve over the next few weeks.
One thing that I know is important to any kind of venture is structure and discipline. Having a structure to your work and being disciplined enough to see it through is the only way to put yourself in a position to be successful. It seems crazy when I say it; but stand-up comedians are the most structured and disciplined people I know. I've known stand up comedians try out the same one-liner joke out at over 100 venues until they get it completely perfect - and as soon as they manage to get it perfect they say it that exact way every single time. Not a single word changes!
Talking about it that way seems to make comedy seem incredibly dull (ironic, right) but it takes that kind of discipline to create the laughter. If you've never seen it watch Jerry Seinfeld's film "Comedian" - it's an incredible movie and shows you the hard work that Stand Up Comics have to put in to get to the top of their game and stay there. They have the structure (the structure of the joke setup-bridge-punchline) and the discipline (to continue trying the joke out and tweaking it, even if it fails, and then when it works not to change it).
How does this link into WA? Well, a book that changed my life is "Great By Choice" by Hansen and Collins. I was given this book by the Managing Director of a company I used to work for - he give it to all of his managers because he wanted them to all follow the formula that he believed brought his company success. the book follows the fortunes of companies in a number of different sectors over the space of 20 years to see what the successful companies did differently to the less successful companies. If you've read this book then you will know that the successful companies all followed the same formula (unknowingly) and these companies were all 10 times more successful than the competition.
If you are serious about making your online business succeed then make sure you follow this formula: Fanatical discipline, Empirical Creativity, Productive Paranoia and passion. I'll talk more about this in future posts; but I cannot recommend reading this book highly enough - every successful Managing Director or CEO swears by it.
