I’m sure everyone has heard that success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. It’s a good reminder of what’s needed. There’s no easy road to success; nobody’s going to hand you what you want on a plate. If they did, how valuable would it be to you? Could you look at it and think ‘That’s mine. I did that’ and have a sense of satisfaction and achievement? Probably not.

Even so, for most of us, the inspiration and perspiration is sometimes a sour mix and there are times when we look at our efforts and wonder ‘What’s going wrong? How come I’m not a success?’ Well, a long time ago, I was told by someone much wiser than me that there are five keys to success. I’d like to share them with you, so here they are

• The first key is Desire. Nothing exists unless there is the Desire for it to be. If the Desire is weak, it becomes only a hope and the gate is not opened. If the Desire is strong, it opens the first gate.
• The second key is Will. When the Desire is strong, the gate is opened and the Will is activated. If the Will is weak, there is nothing further. If the Will is strong, it opens the next gate.
• The third key is Action. When Desire and Will are strong and in harmony, the result is directed Action. Where Action is inconstant and not directed, there is little progress and the gate remains closed. Action, in harmony with Will and Desire, opens the next gate.
• The fourth key is Application. Desire gave you the wanting, Will gave you the drive, Action gave you the activity. Application, doing and not giving up, fills your basket with the fruits of your labours. How many times have you seen talented, clever, people fail because they give up, have no patience or expect their genius to be a sure-fire recipe for success?

However, there is another key. Without this key you will always find the final gate locked and all your aspirations out of reach, no matter how strong your Desire and Will may be, or how much Action and Application you give to your works. The hidden key is Belief. If you do not believe, it will not happen, and no amount of inspiration or perspiration will change that. But belief in what? In your activities? Your desires? Your friends? Your colleagues? None of these can bring you success. There is only you. Only you can do it. And you can do it. So believe in yourself. Do it.
