I hate my wife's drawings...
A strange thing happened with my wife on the 3rd of July 2014.
You see, her drawings (let me put that mildly) are not great, and she knows it: we just get rid of them as soon as they are made.
During the past month, she was following a training course in our boys’ primary school. Drawing, crafting and a few other related things involved.
I laughed out loud when she told me that she received quite a bit of praises for her drawing skills.
Anyway...
Fast forward to this famous day of the 3rd of July 2014. She grabbed a pen and a paper and started to draw and...
...WOW !
It wasn't a 'Mona Lisa' but what an improvement !!!
Instead of putting it in the bin, I scanned it and used it as a background for the family computer.
Now, don't get me wrong. She did not transform overnight into a fantastic artist but she taught me a few lessons:
- Do what you love.
- Persevere in it
- Believe in yourself
- ...
We tend to underestimate the impact praises can have, even on us adult. See how my wife's belief was impacted by the praises she received ?
One of the best aspect of WA is the opportunity to interact with like minded people, ready to help each others.
Do somebody a huge favor today: appreciate what they are doing. Let them know about it.
You don't know the impact your kind words will have on their life and the life of those around them just because you said 'well done'; just because you lifted them up.
By the way, putting my wife's drawing on the family computer was my way of saying: ' sorry darling, I missed the mark here. Won't happened again'. I spoke to her: We are cool.
I want to lift up the spirit of others.
If this blog post spoke to you one way or another, say something. Show your appreciation. Lift up my spirit.
Dedicated to YOUR success!

Nice job Rad
I can relate with praising some one to lift their spirit. Like you stated, they will lift the spirits of others around them. Then everyone is happy happy happy (duck dynasty). Thanks for the pick me up Rad.

Rom,
Thank you for this post! I need to remember this with my kids too. They respond so much better to praise than criticism, and although they may currently not be good at a specific skill/talent, if it's what they enjoy and love doing, they can certainly develop with time. I think of my niece, who I did not think of as being particularly graceful as a little girl (afterall, she is my brother's daughter), but now she's in college studying dance and is quite incredible at it.
This is also a great reminder for all of us at WA who are at various stages in our learning process.
Regards,
Patrick
