Seasonal Affective Disorder: Any Vit D user feedback?

This is a totally none IM related and random question so I'll get right to the point:

Does you or anybody you know use Vitamin D and if so would you be willing to give me a quick bit of info on why you use it, what strength and do you see / feel any discernible benefit?

This is nothing to do with any marketing, it's a personal issue of how to survive Winter without hibernating which I swear I'm just not ruling out for next year!

Thanks if you can help, no worries if it's not up your alley :)

Paula.

This is related to the places where sunlight is a luxury. In absence of clear skies you are likely to get deficiency of vit D.

I take 5000 IU/day. Wife(medical professional) makes me. Also any time I can get outside even if it is cloudy I take the opportunity. Of course the best solution is 2 weeks in Florida.
For you? How's your French, perhaps a bit of a vaca in the Med?

Thanks Craig :) Following my research I'm thinking 5000IU Vit D3 in lieu of two weeks on Santorini ... lol. Seriously though it's surprising how many people are taking such measures these winter days.

That was not a promo. I just like dr. oz.

dr. oz.com he has recommendations on amounts and how to get the most benefits from vit D Just do a search for Vit D on his site you should be able to find it.

Thanks amfc I'll look that up:)

Anytime I have to take a hard pill (vitamins), I always dissolve them in a little Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV). I take 2-3 Tablespoons a day. It can be mixed with juice for taste. The (ACV) dissolves the pill so when it enters the digestive, it can be used by the body sooner and easier. Alot of the hard pills will not break down in the stomach, and are passed on giving you no benefit. I will not go into all of the benefits of (ACV) on its own, but you can find it on the internet, just type in Apple Cider Vinegar.
Bob

Thanks Bob. I remember hearing ACV has some pretty good benefits. I'll be sure to look that up :), P.

I take a 1,000 vitamin D-3 for the days I know I will be house bound. It could be just mental, but I believe it does energize and get rid of the dull-drums.

Thanks EnjoyLife :) Sometimes it can be tricky working out what's working can't it? My intuition's been nudging me to Vit D and comments like yours and Thomas' are helping me decide. Certainly won't do me any harm. Is it only on days when you're indoors when you experience low energy and the dull-drums?

Im a partime Accountant and apply Decorative Concrete the other time. I do the accounting work indoors, so it could be either the working indoors or the accounting. lol. I'm in Edmonton AB and our winter days are Long - 16 hours, sunshine is scares. I only take the D-3 in the winter time.

Have a look at the Philips goLITE BLU.

I have one and it's awesome.
Have it shining on me right now while I work.

Thanks Jay that does look pretty good and the reviews are mostly great too ... neat, compact, a nice light and best of all seems to do a good job for peeps ...

I've had mine on today but it's a few years old now and it's a big one that fair blinds me ... lol ...

Hmm might have to invest ... thanks Jay, P.

Now you know my secret for always being happy and cheerful during the WAbinars! lol

Thought that was the beer. Oh,I remember that is after.

I just started on it on the recommendation of my doctor. He seems to think that most people have a vitamin D deficiency. Before I started taking it I searched google for "vitamin d studies" and came across this article:

http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/vitamin-d/index.html

After reading that, I felt that there was very little harm(most likely none) in me taking it although there seems to be very little long-term studies about vitamin d.

Here's some photos of the one I'm taking. My doctor seems to think that not all vitamin d's are made equal. I'm not sure if that's true or not or if they just want me to buy it from their office since they have it there.

I really haven't felt that different since taking it although I don't really track how I feel on a day to day basis. I also started taking it less than a week ago.

Thomas

That's really useful, especially the research article. Thanks Thomas. I was thinking of a 2000 IU but I see yours is 5000 IU which is interesting.

I already use a medical grade SAD light but I get worse every year and Vit D keeps coming into my head. I'm not one for taking supplements willy nilly but I think I'm going to give it a try.

Thanks for your help, really appreciate you taking the time Thomas :)
