My story about getting internet backup.

I've noticed, because I've had to make some calls from Thailand back to the U.S., that my internet service wasn't handling Skype very well. Since I want to do coaching using Skype I realised I needed a better connection.

At first I thought I would need to change internet providers, but what I was told was that the providers wanted me to sign a one year contract and because I am a foreigner to pay six months in advance. Since it's quite possible that I'll be moving in a few months I didn't want to tie myself down to that.

So a friend suggested that I get internet service on my iPhone and use it as a hotspot. She had gone to a provider called Dtac and gotten 10GB service for around 800 Baht (Baht is the Thai currency and at present they are about 35 Baht to the dollar).

That seemed like a good idea, because I need backup for the times when the internet is down, which does happen every now and then. But I wanted to check with my current provider before I changed over. In Thailand you can switch from provider to provider and keep the same number, but you need to change sim cards.

I went to AIS, my current provider and told them that I wanted to add internet service. they said that would cost 1,098 Baht (12GB). Since I knew I could get it cheaper I told them that I would be changing over to Dtac. Lo and behold, the customer service rep. looked around in his computer and found that he could give me 10 GB service for a year for 499 Baht a month. I had been paying 299 Baht for telephone service alone, so it was a great deal.

So the two morals of this story are that 'there are all kinds of solutions out there' and 'You don't get what you don't ask for'.

And in line with that I'm going to ask you to 'like' this blog

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Cheers to you.

yeah there is negotiations well done always shop around and barter

Great news! I would add another moral - always look for alternatives.

Nice story. Ask and you will receive.

Good story. It is amazing the hoops some people will jump through to get your business.

Good blog and so true that you don't get what you don't ask for. When I went with my wife to upgrade her iphone what a lousy deal they were going to give her. I told them h_ll no and she was going to switch to a Galaxy and different carrier. Well, the deal got a lot better. They'll take advantage if you let them.

All you have to do is to threaten to change providers and "Lo and behold" there's all kinds of great deals to keep you as a customer.
Just be prepared to change for real if they're not offering anything great. I used to work for tech support, so I know now how it works.
