Got Rhodiola Anyone?

If you didn't know by now, I love herbs. It is something I have not shared here at WA, but, with Winter almost behind us, we probably have realized that more than a few pounds have been packed on.. I know I have gained, at least, 15 pounds in the last 6 months alone. :{

I also have a few other issues, stress, change of life, depression(mild, but, annoying), and fatigue(older age setting in?)

Nevertheless, with everything going on with websites and all around here, it is easy to neglect our bodies, right?

Enter Rhodiola!

  • Rhodiola Rosea is a traditional Chinese herb, where it is called hóng jǐng tiān.
  • It prefers full sun and drained, rocky soil, in climates that dip below freezing.
  • The aerial part can be consumed and used in salads.
  • It has many intriguing possiblities and has been used most interestingly for altitude sickness, by sherpas climbing Mount Everest.
  • Traditional uses include cancer, anxiety, flu, colds, bacterial infections and migraines.
  • Dr. Axe suggests this herb, as well, for depression, weight loss, burning belly fat, lowering cortisol in the body, and improving brain function.

With a list like that, who wouldn't want to try this impressive herb? I went out and bought some a few weeks ago, by coincidence. I was using a herbal extract blend with Ginko Biloba and Ginseng, as well, as this new mystery herb Rhodiola. Well, I have heard of it before , but, just never paid attention to it..

Now it has my full attention and I hope it has yours, as well! For, after further investigation, I bought a good extract and will be using it as directed!

Early Spring is great time for detoxing the body, where outside you can find many medicinal herbs mistakenly called weeds. Eat them. Don't kill them. Good grief! They only grow like mad to get our attention!! Lol!

The young dandelions, lamb's quarters and stinging nettles are excellent for strengthening and mildly detoxing a sluggish end of winter mind and body.. But, the plants get bitter with age , so, make sure to pick them very young. Also, wear gloves if you are fortunate enough to find stinging nettle plants nearby. A quick bruising of this plant will take away its sting..

If you do not want to pick them fresh, you can always find a good quality tea( or the dried leaf) or extract, which I prefer, at the health food or bulk herb store.

  • Also, do not JUST take my word for this. Find an herbalist, like DMorrow, naturopath, or functional medicine doctor, preferably, to make sure any herbs you use will not interfere with drugs or medications you use.

Okay so I know that is a really odd article, but, we need our minds and bodies to be working optimally.

Also, see one of my old blogs about moving around:

Personally, since I have started working online, I need to reminded to take care of myself, my mind and body as a whole. It is so easy just to keep going and not eat or drink or even go pee when we should! LOL!

So, take a minute for yourself here for a break if you have not already.. That website is not going anywhere and when you are refreshed , you will feel better and be more productive. (remind me of this later when you hear me whining, okay/!) :)

Okay, again, sorry, if I went out on a limb here, but, if you know me, you can and should expect just about anything! LOl! Now, for a cup of tea!

Have a great weekend! love you all!

I am a big believer in herbs and I have to be more vigilant during winter months as my health does not do well I am pleased to say I have gain no weight and I also think it is good to dextox the body on a regular basis I also do not eat processed foods, no red meat and have good fresh food

1

Katie, my body has started really reacting to meat I eat the last few years and I have to be very careful now! Processed food, too, I feel it right away. I ate organic granola this morning, bam, my face got little hot flashes..Good food is no joke.. I have never had a weight problem , underweight, actually, but, I need to be more vigilant, it looks like.. I am like , 'Eewww, what is that?!".. Hubby, "That is called fat, dear, it's not a tumor!" Lol!

Well, hi there Keane! How is my awesome friend?! So good to see you, I hope all is going well for you! Thanks for the smile!:) pJ

Thank goodness, I thought I was going to have to find another vaccine.

Lol! Right!! That is funny right there!!

Hi PJ, yes I have heard of rhodiola since it is grown in Alaska. It is just a small niche market here but is taking off since our climate is perfect for it. I have dreams of being a peony or rhodiola farmer! Peonies grow well here too. Due to our climate peonies bloom here in August and September. This means if someone wants them (for a wedding for example) during that time, they only come from Alaska since they bloom earlier in the rest of the country.

1

Jessica, that is very interesting. I am glad to hear another peony lover around here. Wow, farming sound like a big job there! But, They are one of my favorites, so, to look at a field of them would be divine! This is so interesting! where do you live in Alaska?

I grew up in the Wrangell St. Elias National Park. We had huge gardens there. Now I live in Anchorage. There are peony farms an hour north and 5 hours south of here. No room in the city though. The average home on a regular lot costs almost $400,000! I do know of a home just a half mile from her where they converted the lawn into a rhodiola patch. One or two farmers in the Mat Su area (an hour north) have experimental rhodiola farms.

Hi PJ,
This herb sounds like a perfect remedy for me but I don't know one plant from another so I wouldn't eat anything that I saw growing it would probably be some poison thing. So is there a recommended amount of this stuff that you should take? I guess you can find it in a nutrition store is that right?
It sounds really great!!
Thanks for the info,
Barbara

Hi Barbara. I teach about living naturally. Your interest about Rhodiola is a good thing. Rhodiola is a wonderful calming herb for stress and fatigue. And yet a stimulating herb for certain forms of energy and brain function. It is recommended to start slow by taking 100 mg a day for 7 days. Then you can increase up to 400 mg a day. With this particular herb you may find it easiest to take using the extract. The dropper gives precise dosage.

1

Hello, there Bev! Thanks for the good answer! Pj

Hello, there Barbara, always nice to see you my friend!! ♥, Look find a good book with pictures before we go out poking around in the bushes, LOl! plus, having someone to actually show you is the best way.. Bridgette Mars has some great videos and does herbal walks online as well. I enjoy my herb videos!! And learn much from them..
It is well worth your time and health.
If I didn't mention it above, extracts are the most beneficial, preferably a glycerite, which is naturally sweet and alcohol free. Always start out with less than the recommended dosage if you are not sure of allergies or interactions.
Do you have a good health store in your area? PJ :)

I've never had a cup of Rhodiola! Let me know how that goes for you. If it really works well I might want to try it too! PS - thanks for the name drop.

Blessings,
Debby
