Evolving Pt 2
So I got to this part where I evaluate my progress since the beginning. Here goes!
I have a page with some halfway decent posts on it, optimized and everything, got my google+ acct set up and the authorship linked, and I learned how to go around in the editor (I followed through some HTML/CSS tutorials too at that time, which helped a lot). I could say I covered everything Kyle talked about.
I had some difficulties with the content, what I can and can't put in, whether you need authorization to post links, etc. For instance, I learned from a colleague here at WA, that in general you cannot post somebody's pieces of content, but you can link to them, and that gives me the principle for it: if the audience sees the pretty pictures on your page, even if they're credited, it's like stealing percentage of the glory off of the people that created that content. However, if you link to it, it will send the viewer back to the original page, and he acknowledges the author of the content more clearly. Fair enough to me.
Now that I have the tech base, I can go to the next level and actually learn my niche!
I chose my niche with absolutely no idea what I was talking about. I always thought that jewelry and the making of it is something anybody can do, better or worse, you don't need to go to school or to be smart, you just need to like it and do it. This was also my first impression of WA: that it's designed to work for everybody if everybody wants, no experience needed, and no difficult tech stuff. So I just picked something that I could fill with whatever cos it'll turn up good.
It was arrogant of me, and now I realize how much I have to learn to keep a good website. On the other hand, it's true that you can START anything not knowing what you're doing, but on the way you're gonna have to learn, and it's not even a bad thing!
This is a subject nobody here speaks about, or maybe I didnt know what to look for. Everyone (and I mean not necessarily here at WA, but everyone) praises the frames and the rules, but nobody tells you "you should know what you're talking about". I think maybe people know that intrinsically, but I didn't and it took me a while to register.
And I think actually this is my greatest accomplishment since I joined WA one month ago. Can't believe it's just one month!
The actual website is up&ready, I just need to learn about my subject so I know what to write and where to go with it. So learning my trade will be the next step for me, and after I work on that for a while I'll probably have a better vision of the long term objective.
Somebody said to me: "just stick around, at some point everything will start to make sense".
Well, it has! So good luck everyone, and be motivated!
