Getting the Most out of Banners
My impression has always been that banner advertising is pretty close to worthless and I'm not sure I've changed my mind a lot on that at this point, but I stumbled across something today which at least got me a couple of clicks, so I thought I'd share and see what others think.
Basically, if we are designing websites to meet the needs of our targeted group of people (niche) and a well designed page is one where that targeted group will find it by searching certain keywords in a search engine, why not create banners which focus on those keywords and point them to that page or post? That way it won't be a generic click on an interesting looking banner, but someone seeing something of interest and clicking through to find a helpful page instead of one screaming for them to pull out their credit card.
Hardly time to claim success with just a few clicks, but this model seems to make sense to me and at least I got a couple clicks out of a fairly low number of impressions.

Very cool observance. So you are using banners to promote your own content?
Just something I thought I'd try - I was poking around various "traffic" sites and it seemed like a bunch of pyramid schemes, so I thought I'd write a post about Pyramid Schemes and I created a banner about being stuck in Pyramid schemes. Not sure I will convert anything, but these sites give free credits, so I figured it was worth a shot.
Testing is always a good idea (just don't get to caught up in it). It's how we find what works best for our site. Please keep my posted on your results.
