When a memory is first recorder in the hippocampus part of the brain, it’s still very fragile and easily forgotten. Napping pushes memories to the neocortex, the brain’s permanent storage area, and this prevents memories from being overwritten and forgotten.
Napping also helps clear information out of your brain’s temporary storage area, the neocortex, getting it ready for more information to be retained. According to the Huffington Post, researcher have found that the right side of the brain is more active during a nap, than the left side, which stay rather quiet during sleep.Even though 95% of the population is right handed with the left side of their brain more dominant, the right side is the more active during sleep. The right side handles “housecleaning” while asleep and cleans out your temporary storage areas. This pushes information into the long-term storage area and retains your memories for the day.
So , if you have the luxury, a little nap will do you and your brain some good!
