Marketing is a wonderful thing. To do well, you need to understand your target market, find ways to relate, be creative, and become good at a whole bunch of things. If you want business success, they say, you have to master marketing.

In reality, though, Marketing is one part of what makes a business successful. If you are starting or growing a business, you might find this series of posts to be interesting.

WHAT you think will drive what you do. HOW you think will develop attitudes and habits. Think of it as building muscle memory for your mind.

So, how do you think about your clients? Do you think about them as "customers" who buy things from you? Or do you think about them as "clients" to who you have a moral and ethical responsibility?

How do you think about your staff and service providers? Are they part of YOUR team? Or are they essential partners in the success of your business AND the community that your business serves?

You can do the same kind of self-reflection about other aspects of your business. The thing to remember is that your business exists because it adds value to different groups of people, and to specific individuals as well.

So, what exactly is "value"?

Is there value in helping someone make a million dollars? What if the person you are talking to is already a multi-billionaire steel producer who won't look at anything less than $50 million? What if the person in front of you just walked out of the desert and is dying of thirst? Other than a glass of water, nothing else has value to them?

When you think about value, you need to think about the person you're talking to. The best way to think about it is like my friend (the steel producer) put it: "Your job in business is to offer a glass of water to a thirsty person. That's it. If you understand what your client values, and you offer it to them in a respectful way, you have yourself a business."

So, HOW do you think about your business? Is it a vehicle to fulfill your dreams? Or is it an organization that you set up to offer value to your clients; and is your business set up in a way that supports and empowers your staff and suppliers?

If you start thinking about your business in the second way, your business will transform itself --- and your marketing will be far, far more effective.
