Why Relationships Are the Real Currency in Business (And Online Success)

So, this morning, I’m doing the usual commute into the city, about to drop my wife off at her office, when she suddenly decides she wants me to stop and buy a pie from a roadside vendor.
Now, we’ve known this vendor for years—very reputable.
Then she adds, “It’s our daughter’s birthday today… get her one too.”
Long story short, I ended up buying six pies for five people.
I park across the road to avoid blocking traffic—but ironically, I still managed to block a sanitation truck and had to move.
When I finally joined the already long line, something interesting happened.
The vendor’s husband looked at me… and already knew my order.
That caught my attention.
Then I overheard him telling another customer how he managed to get eggs from a supplier—even though they were already sold out—simply because he was a regular customer.
That’s when it hit me:
👉 Relationships change outcomes.
🧠 What This Taught Me About Relationships
That small moment revealed something powerful:
People don’t just do business based on price or convenience.
They do business based on:
- trust;
- familiarity; and
- connection.
And those things are built over time.

🔍 The Psychology Behind Relationships
At a deeper level, relationships are driven by psychological principles:
1. Trust
We naturally prefer people we feel safe with.
2. Reciprocity
When someone gives value, we feel inclined to return it.

3. Familiarity
The more we see or interact with someone, the more we trust them.
4. Consistency
People who show up consistently build stronger connections.

In life and business, we build different types of relationships:
- Personal (family, friends);
- Professional (colleagues, clients);
- Transactional (buyers, sellers); and
- Community-based (groups, networks).
The strongest businesses are built on more than transactional relationships.

In traditional business, relationships determine:
- repeat customers;
- referrals; and
- long-term growth.
That vendor didn’t just sell pies.
He built loyal customers.
And loyalty is far more valuable than a one-time sale.

Many people think online business is just:
- websites;
- traffic; and
- clicks.
But the truth is:
👉 It’s still about people, in fact it's always about people.
If you want to build a long-term online business, you need to build relationships through:
- helpful content;
- honest recommendations; and importantly
- consistent engagement.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned inside Wealthy Affiliate is that success online isn’t just about tools—it’s about people.
The platform teaches you:
- how to build a business, one step at a time;
- how to create real value; and
- how to connect with your audience.
But what stands out most is the community.
Inside Wealthy Affiliate, you’re not building alone.
You’re surrounded by people:
- sharing insights;
- offering help; and
- building alongside you as you grow.
And over time, those interactions turn into real relationships.

That roadside moment reminded me of something simple but powerful:
👉 People don’t always choose the cheapest option.
👉 Most time, they choose the person they trust.
Whether offline or online, relationships are the foundation of everything.
Build them with intention; and
Nurture them with consistency.
And over time, they will open doors you never expected.
