Those things help... but
They aren't the deciding factor.
The deciding factor is much less exciting.
It's called showing up.
Some thirty years ago, my third daughter, Valeschia, was dancing around our home in Trinidad wrapped in bedsheets or whatever cloth she could find, pretending she was on a grand stage.
At three years old she calmly announced,
"I'm going to become a doctor."
Her inspiration, my bigger sister Diane, then herself in Mississippi studying to be a Pediatric Cardiologist surgeon and succeeding.
Children say many things, and we smile ... but
She actually did it.
Fast forward to June 2026.
New York Presbyterian.
Class Valedictorian.
Dream fulfilled.
Not because she was lucky… but
Because she built habits.
