He writes "So the pages are in the index but they are hidden, like when you use the URL removal tool." Not sure what he means.
I have a similar anomaly at my side, in one site all indexed but impressions reduced 15 times.
With John, it is his ridiculous use of his robots.txt (there's something like 50,000+ different things on it).
So, this probably isn't the same as those who received a Manual Penalty and had all their articles deindexed (I think this is a technical blip until John sorts his robots.txt out).
What you're currently experiencing is what a LOT of people are currently experiencing.
Obviously, I don't know for sure, but it's kinda like what I said in my last blog post.
Potentially, nearly everyone will lose impressions and clicks over the next 2 weeks (up until around 19th March), and then the websites that are deemed "okay" (and don't forget that Google is trying to view sites on a page-by-page basis, not so much the sitewide HCU standards) will start to "recover naturally" after that.
BUT
This whole thing isn't really over until the May 5th rollout mainly dealing with Parasite SEO, aged domain 301 redirects, and Mass Production spam.
But, although it doesn't feel great, the vast majority of "vocal" people have ether been handed a manual penalty and deindexed or are seeing impressions decreasing to ALMOST zero.
Just do the
site:mywebsite .com
check in Google to confirm that you have X number of indexed results, and then there is "hope" that something good may happen.
But, as I say, there is a HUGE number of people seeing this decline in Impressions and Clicks (to almost nothing) in GSC.
We ALL just have to wait it out unfortunately.
He's lucky he still has his X (Twitter) profile! 😄
In other words, diversifying traffic sources is a smart move!
