Usually WP gives some kind of error message.
But I don't remember seeing an update may damage your site.
It is possible some of your plugins are out of date too.
What version of WordPress do you have installed?
Also if we would tell you to update, you need to make a backup copy of your website first.
Nothing Bad will happen to your website if WP is not updated right away.
