Kia Ora Nika, try using Point or MH Magazine lite.
But my advice is not to dwell on it too much put more of your time into content creation.
The way you structure your website and the Theme you choose will evolve as you create more content.
In the beginning, I changed Themes 5 or 6 times before I settled on the one I have today.
It's always good to see another Kiwi here, give us a shout out if you ever need a hand, I would be more than happy to help.

I agree with Shane. When searching themes, use the filter to look at themes that enable multiple menu locations.
I generally prefer not to suggest plugins, but this one might help you to customize category menus more to your liking.
Menu plugins should only be used when you fully understand how to set up menus and category menus becasue you might be able to achieve the same result without a plugin.
