My name is Gary and I studied for a Degree in Computer Science in the 1980s and became a programmer / software engineer. I worked for various companies for a decade before forming my own company. I leased out my services as a software contractor for another decade before I'd had enough of the rat race and office BS.

My plan in 2004 was to take a year out, chill, and play on the internet. Astronomy is a hobby, and I wrote the first version of LunarPhase (a software tool for predicting various lunar phenomena) in 1999 and had been selling it online as shareware. I made a couple of hundreds dollars a month from it. Based on that success (I wasn't paying for advertising), I looked at making more money, and possibly a living, online. Between 1999 and 2004, I wrote a more comprehensive application called LunarPhase Pro and it took over from the earlier version of the software. It's still selling today (I do keep it updated). You can see it here: https://www.lunarphasepro.com

By the end of 2004, I was making enough money online to pay the bills with some to spare and I could actually bank money. So the plan of going back to software contracting was thrown out the window.

I made a decent living online for the next 7 years. I thought I'd weathered the downturn after the 2008 financial crash, but it turns out that the wave was just slow in getting to me. Since 2011, things have been continuously going downhill where affiliate marketing has been concerned.

I used to make good commissions with Commission Junction but they kicked me out for alleged click fraud. I've never done that. I was in regular contact with one of their reps by phone while we tried to figure out what had gone wrong. Turns out that whatever link masking technique SiteSell (who I was with at the time) was using was the cause of the apparent click fraud. Once I'd got my supporting documentation together, I called my contact back. When I told him I had evidence to support my innocence, he was told to hang up the phone. CJ would not accept any calls from me after that. Since then, I've heard of many other affiliates who get kicked out of their affiliate program with no explanation or recourse. In all these cases, CJ refuse to pay outstanding commissions. I lost a couple of thousand dollars right there.

Then the various birdy algorithms from Google started to hit. And, one by one, my sites started to disappear from the rankings. Many legitimate online businesses were wiped out pretty much overnight by these changes. I never did anything black-hat and wrote all my own content, so it was all 100% unique. Yet my sites were being penalised. Some things I could fix, others...well, since Google wouldn't tell me what was wrong with the sites, I couldn't fix those issues. With loss of rankings went loss of earnings. Where I used to make $600-$1000 a month in Adsense per month, now I'm lucky if I make $6 from all my sites combined.

And, with the loss of traffic, all the other affiliate offers on my sites dried up.

Since 2011, I've been trying to rebuild the affiliate marketing side of my business. I've tried a few high-priced courses and none have delivered. The highest-priced course went silent when I complained about their lack of support.

To pay the bills, I build secure, SEO WordPress sites and offer ancillary services (http://www.topdesignblogs.com). The blogs are configured for on-site SEO, but I don't offer an off-site SEO service. Building sites is easy. Ranking them is the hard part and that I leave to clients.

So I'm here in Wealthy Affiliate now. I need to hit the "reset" button on what I know about off-site SEO and ranking sites and come at the topic from a new direction.

I built my WA site around the topics of list building and email marketing and is unimaginatively at https://EmailListBuildingTechniques.com/

I've even branched out into Facebook and have a Group there called Affiliate Marketing Circle. You're welcome to join here:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/AffiliateMarketingCircle/

While I do earn money building sites, it is still a job. I want to get back to the passive income model so I can start getting my time back.

My favorite business opportunity now https://www.BecomeFinanciallySecure.com which teaches you how to go about building a sustainable passive income. The affiliate program here at WA is great, but I think this one is better.

I do write about internet marketing from time to time at https://webbizkb.com

Nightwatch's Goals 3
Money Goals
1. At a minimum, $1500 per month would cover the expected and known bills. On this salary, little tax is payable in my country. $3000 is the secondary goal. On this salary, about 40% goes to tax, so in net salary terms, it's not hugely higher than earning $1500/mth. Goal 3 would be to earn $5000 per month.

2. Goal 4 would be $10,000 per month - I'd be ecstatic with that. Earning this amount would make it easy to cover the costs of renovations and fixes that my house could do with.

3. I work full time from home, so 6-8 hours a day is what I can give (except when I have to build sites for clients).
1
Money I would be happy earning
2
Money I would be ecstatic earning
3
Time I'm willing to invest to achieve my goals

Hey there Gary

These are great goals and they are more than achievable! The more time you can spend on learning here within the Community at Wealthy Affiliate the better, but we've built WA so that you can work at your own pace!

I know that you are going to do great!

I'm really glad you have added these goals Gary!

This tells me you are serious about starting up an online business from home. I can tell you from personal experience (I have been doing this full time for 2 and a half years now) that these goals are very reasonable. If you treat this like a business and not a get rich quick scheme you will start seeing some awesome results.

Success all starts with a goal and now that you set some goals for yourself you have something to work towards.

With the amount of time you are willing to invest here I know that you will start making progress and I really am looking forward to working with you Gary. You have an entire community to help you reach these goals. Let me know if you need a hand with anything going forward. I look forward to helping you reach these goals and I will talk to you soon.
Let's do this!!
Your Friend, Scott

I hope things are going well. I know you are getting rolling within the training and there is ONE thing that always tends to confuse people and that is "what is my niche?".

I know, same thing happened to me when I started.

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am here if you ever want to run any niche "ideas" by me or you have any questions about finding your niche.

Get back to me when you get the chance! :)

Hi Gary,
Welcome to WA. You are an old hand on websites and affiliate marketing so you will certainly have a speedy start.

As a newbie only 2 1/2 in, on both above and going through your profile, I am sure WA training will help piece together the missing pieces to your puzzles.

And personally I find the lessons to updated regularly, which should save lot of research time.

Will want to stay connected to learn from an expert like you if stuck in future.

All the best this time around with WA. Cheers, Jack

Thanks, Jack. Driving traffic is my weak spot (and something I've never enjoyed!) :)

Gary, if I may add, you in the right place. A lot leads right here on that subject, in the basic lessons by Kyle, Carson and other members and in the classrooms.

If I am not mistaken, it is the probably one of most key concept presented in different context by each lessons and trainers, and in precise yet easy step by step methodology.

I will be interested to see over time, you opinion, comparing as being a subject matter expert on what I may term if you don't mind 'the conventional way' and the WA way.

May make interesting blog/post. Let me know. Again, wish you success. Thank again. Jack

Welcome To Wealthy Affiliate Gary!

My name is Scott and it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. You may remember me from my website A Work At Home Business! I'm absolutely thrilled to see that you have signed up and are ready to get to work building an online business.

Building a business can be extremely overwhelming and confusing in itself so I don't want to add to your confusion or overwhelm you any more than you already are.

Starting out, there are only 2 things you need to know.

1. People who TAKE ACTION by asking questions and interacting within the community are much more likely to be successful and learn this stuff faster than someone who joins and does nothing.

2. The level 1 certification course will explain the process of how to make money online and you should have a pretty solid foundation built by the end of this course.

Did you know you can have your first website up and running by the end of lesson 4? Pretty crazy ain't it?

Click the link below to get started on your first lesson *****Gain Access To My Awesome Bonuses*****

For starters, you're going to receive a massive discount of nearly 60% off your first month. This comes out to only $19 which is an amazing deal by itself.

BONUS #1- Gain Instant access to a 3 part video training series where Kyle (Co-Owner of WA) takes you by the hand and walks you through how to create product reviews.

This will give you the basics on how to create product reviews and how to structure them properly.

BONUS #2- You will gain exclusive access to my personal 1 on 1 mentoring and help and support. I'm sure you have seen other Internet marketing gurus out there charging upwards of $2,000 or more for this same kind of support.

Like I said earlier, people who take action are more likely to be successful and this is why I call this my Action Takers Bonus!

This incredible offer is only valid for your first 7 days so don't miss out!

Also, don't forget if you get stuck or have any questions you can respond directly to this message or drop me a message on my profile. Just thought I'd drop by and give you a personal welcome to the community and get you started down the right path to building an online business Gary
