Make your content easy to read!
I found a great new tool yesterday that calculates how easy your content is to read.
It outlines words and sentences in different colours to tell you
- What sentences are very hard to read
- What sentences are hard to read
- What phrases have a simpler alternative
- Usage of passive rather than active voice
It uses a grading system to tell you how complicated the content is. Hemingway, one of the most famous authors of all time wrote at a grade 4 level.
I pasted in a 600 word+ article and it told me that it was a grade level 18 and told me it would take 4 mins, 30 secs to read.
After making all the suggestions it made, the article was at a grade 4, took 1 min 30 secs to read and was 50 words less.
And, do you know what it is easier to read.
Check out your posts by using the tool at http://www.hemingwayapp.com/
By the way, this blog post is grade 3 :-)
All the best
Nick

Thanks Nick, great tool. I usually use wordcounttools.com. It gives you a total word count and the 'readability' level. I usually hit the 11-12th grade level which I'm happy with.

This may be a dumb question, but what grade are you aiming for? I am guessing the lower the better?
Good question, I am experimenting at the moment, but studies have shown the average American reads at a tenth-grade level — so that's a good target.
Apologies for the late reply, I have been on a long vacation with my family.
