Staying Calm When Rankings Drop: Lessons Learned From Google

This week feels like a full-circle moment.

After 18 months of steady work, my website traffic has finally returned to where it was before I rebuilt the site.

Let me explain.

Two years ago, I made the decision to rebuild my website from scratch. I wanted full control over the structure, layout, and content rather than relying on someone else to manage it for me.

I couldn’t adapt to the Elementor theme, so I went back to basics and rebuilt it using the WA training modules.

What I didn’t fully appreciate at the time was the impact that change would have on my Google rankings.

Previously, my site consistently ranked between positions 1 and 3. After the rebuild and coping with several Google algorithm updates, those rankings dropped rapidly. At one point, I was sitting around position 74–75.

Traffic dropped. Visibility dropped. Sales dropped.

That's when the confidence wobbled and panic almost set in.

Adapting Instead of Panicking

On top of the ranking drop, new algorithm updates placed greater emphasis on E-E-A-T especially for finance related websites.

Because I operate in the finance industry, I had to demonstrate Experience, Expertise, Authority and Trust at a much higher level.

That meant:

  • Strengthening author credibility - this involved linking more external content like Amazon Author back to the website.
  • Improving structure - adding more "about" content, product pages and improving policies, restructuring how blogs are written including external references such as the Fed, Bank of England and IMF.
  • Expanding topical depth - narrowing catergories and writing more posts in each category.
  • Building consistency - working everyday on the website. Adding a new blog once a week, updating old blogs, linking podcasts, youtube, Medium articles, Flipboard and other external content back to the website.
  • AI and Search Friendly - adding SEO, AEO, GEO and LLM to the website.
  • Being patient - this was the most difficult. Waiting to see the results and tweaking as required.

Another adjustment was evergreen content. Writing about investment markets makes evergreen content challenging. Markets move daily. News changes quickly.

My solution was to separate news and commentary updates from the core website content. I created a secondary platform ( on Blogger with a customised URL) for time-sensitive market updates and linked those insights back to structured, evergreen posts on my main site.

I didn’t get instant results. It was slow and steady. But the results this week, traffic has returned to the levels I had before rebuilding.

The Lessons I've Learned

  1. Google updates can dramatically affect rankings and traffic - don't panic adapt
  2. Structural changes take time to settle - be patient and monitor
  3. Panic creates more damage than patience - stay calm
  4. Persistence and consistency matter more than quick fixes - build the structure
  5. Long-term strategy beats short-term reaction - trust the system

Websites are a lot like investing. There will be volatility. There will be dips. There will be moments when you question your decision.

But if the foundation is solid and you stay consistent, growth returns. Sometimes stronger than before.

This has reminded me that calm, structured action always outperforms emotional reaction and in online business, that mindset makes all the difference.

For me, it’s another reminder that steady progress even when it feels slow compounds over time. One step at a time still moves you forward.
