The Ocean Clean Up

Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment. These harmful materials are called pollutants. Pollutants can be natural, such as natural wastes, and the rest are created by human activity such as trash and runoff produced by factories. There are 4 types of pollution namely: air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, and noise pollution.

This blog will deal with the water pollution, as about 71% pf the earth's surface is water-covered, and the oceans hold about 96.5 % of earth's water. Moreover, water is also present in water vapor, in rivers, in lakes, in icecaps and glaciers.

Water does not sit still, as it goes to the water cycle and constantly moving from one place to another, and from one form to another.

As water pollution is a really vast problem., let me narrow it to ocean pollution. There is more than 8 million tonnes of plastic that enters the ocean every year. With the increase use of plastic in most of the things we use, plastic seems to be overpowering us. Animals mistake plastic waste for prey as we see plastic all around us, and sadly 100,00 animals die from entanglement each year.

Scientists and environmentalists worried that the problem could be having effects on human and ocean health, have done a more active role in ocean pollution prevention. To help solve the problem, they have created the interceptor barrier that intercepts the trash and buffers it until it is removed from the water.

The Interceptor is designed like a catamaran, meaning water passes through the center. Th current of the water moves plastic onto a netted belt, which water filters through and back into the river, and the plastic goes from the conveyor belt into the shuttle. It is 100% solar-powered, extracts plastic autonomously, and is capable of operating in the majority of the world's most polluting rivers. River waste flowing with the current is guided by the barrier towards the opening of the interceptor. The Ocean Clean up Interceptor, is highly reliable to extract about 100,000 kilograms of trash from the ocean each day, and is cleared every six months as per The Environment Agency to prevent blockages and prevent the risk of polluting the environment. Interceptors also separates oil, silt, dirt, grease and harmful contaminants and water traps that are fitted into the drainage system.

The collected plastic from the ocean is recycled and transformed into durable plastic products. According to industrial ecologists and researchers, only 93% of plastic are polymers, and the 7% are additives, that are known to be hazardous.

We cannot recycle our way out of this problem. We need to reduce single-use plastic, or we are facing plastic deluge and the aftermath will be with us essentially forever.

A great read Maria, but if we ALL did our responsibility and not pollute our wonderful planet in the first place, machinery like this would not be needed!!

Sadly though.. this is certainly not the case...

We all must do what we can on a daily basis in order to protect life as we currently know it my friend....

โ˜บ๐Ÿ‘

Absolutely Nick!

If only each of us would take responsibility in keeping our planet as clean.

Thank you for your input here Nick!

Have a great evening!

Cheers,
Maria ๐ŸŒน

I do my best to do so on a daily basis Maria...

But, I see hundred of others who really don't give a %$##, this is what pains me the most...

Take care dear friend!

๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

I know you do my friend! Thatโ€™s why it hurts that some really do not care!

Right back at you my dear!

Cheers,
Maria ๐ŸŒน

Great article - Did you know that the Ocean Clean up Interceptor is not just a one-of-a-kind solution for removing plastic waste from rivers, but also has a design that apparently makes maintenance and expansion a breeze?

The Ocean Cleanup Foundation, the non-profit behind the project, has big plans to deploy multiple units and make a significant dent in ocean plastic pollution.

And they're not alone in their efforts - the project has received support from companies like KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and the MacArthur Foundation, showing that they believe in the potential impact of the Ocean Clean up Interceptor.

Indeed Julia! I believe the cruise lines is also part of the funding to get more Interceptors, so we can achieved/ correct the damaged people had done to the ocean!

Cheers,
Maria ๐ŸŒน

Hi Maria,
really thanks for sharing this post.
In my bay, there was a big oil spill one year. It took years for everything to return to its place after that situation. It's back, but it's the most pleasant since the beginning of corona. Because there were no trips, cruise ships, yachts,... It has been cleaned, but what will happen in a year or two? When will everything go back to normal?
Basically, whatever the people, we are all to blame that the whole nature suffers and that's the point.

Greetings,
Slavka ๐Ÿ‘‹

Understandly so Slavka!
Frustrating as it is, as long as we contribute somehow on lessening the ocean pollution, we are doing something right!

Cheers,
Maria ๐ŸŒน

Great post, Maria!

No ocean cleanups on your Birthday! ๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿ˜Ž

Frank ๐ŸŽธ

Hahahaha Frank ๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿ˜Ž! The ocean is my birth sign (Aquarius)
I would clean the ocean if need be on my birthday. I wanna operate the Interceptor, it seems like a really cool machine to work with! ๐Ÿ˜€

Cheers,
Maria ๐ŸŒน

Yeah, I agree, Maria!

I love big machines, especially those that can help our planet. ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I hate how so many people don't realize how the smallest thing makes the biggest ripple in our environment. "Ow its only one piece of trash I threw out the window"! Well imagine a hundred people have that same thought and do it! God giveth and God can take away....

Kevin and Son

Yes Kevin! It hurts to hear that from some people that donโ€™t realize the impact on that to our only planet.

You should make your son see the Interceptor, and how itโ€™s cleaning our ocean. Pretty amazing!!!

Cheers,
Maria ๐ŸŒน

He love the Discovery channel! He mentioned something about a net or something similar that attracted trash and debris from rivers entering the oceans. I wonder if what you mentioned is the same thing he spoke about?

Kevin and Son

Maybe so! Itโ€™s called The Ocean Interceptor! That suctions the ocean debris, plastic and all! Itโ€™s amazing!
What is more amazing is the amount of plastic it gets from the ocean!

People just donโ€™t care! Sad but true !โ˜น๏ธโ˜น๏ธ
