Remove a link?

I have a question for the community. I wrote several articles at the end of last year about Medicare Part D. I linked to the Medicare.gov site in my article. I just received a request from SilverScript to remove their link from my website.

I didn't directly link to their website in my article. Medicare.gov actually linked to their site.

To remove SilverScript link, I will have to remove the Medicare link. If I do that it not only removes some of my primary links but could have an impact on my rankings and thus traffic to my site.

Question is, what obligations am I under, both ethically and legally, to remove the link?

Thanks so much in advance for any help the comunity can give me on this isue.
