Hi Morna, I use the Empo theme by Anariel Design. It had the basics that I wanted and can be fully customized to your liking. Image 1 is the original theme, Image 2 is how I customized it.
It certainly does take a lot of testing and fussing to find the right theme. What you can do is try themes out on one of your free websites. We get 25 free websites as Premium members so you can use a couple of sites to see what the theme will really do since the descriptions aren't really so helpful.
I have preview many ...but would like to customize the look and feel of my header and footer and the general look of the pages of my site
You might need to learn some code to do that HTML or CSS. I'm not the person to teach you that but Marion or Loes and others will have some training on that.
