I am having an internal dilemma. I have been working on my site for a few months now, and recently started writing posts for someone elses website. She approached me and one post turned in to two and now here we are..

The website I am writing for is along the same niche idea that I am in so the words come easily to me.

The owner of said site just asked me if I would take on a more full-time roll in writing many posts for this site for the next little while.

While I am enjoying the pay cheque, I can't help but feel that this is time and ideas that I am taking away from my own site.

Is there a way to manage both and not feel this way? Is it more along the lines of time management and scheduling that I need to set up?

Left or Right... where to go ?

it's the same as working for someone else and giving YOUR time for a pay check right!!

I would rather concentrate writing posts for my own site rather than for others as in the end, I would profit much more when my site or posts hit number one in Google.

You need to decide on your final goal - Paycheck or you own site? It's one thing to write posts for another site, but it is tough when it's the same niche - then you are indeed taking away from your own site. It's okay to do a short term goal, like getting the paycheck, so don't beat yourself up if that's your short term decision.

An interesting dilemma. I wonder if you set a goal of writing one article for someone else and then an article for yourself, would that help? Also, do you have to come up with the topic of the article for the site you are writing for? Or does the site owner give you a topic?

Maybe you need to create a list of articles for your own site and work on them along with the paid articles. Set a schedule and work that as long as you can. But someday you will have to decide where you want to spend your time and effort.

Ask yourself if you are making more writing for someone else or for yourself?

Hi Montana
if you own business is suffering at the hand of another, then I would choose my own business as this is your future however if you can do both with ease then go for it
All the best and you will know your boundaries and what you are capable of I'm sure

Ok, so, for what it's worth, my kneejerk reaction is that you should spend the time and effort on your own site, which will pay off in the long run, and forego the immediate paycheck for writing for the other site. If you could balance and do a bit of both, perhaps, but otherwise, you should make your site the top priority. Ok, that's my two cents.
Life is personal and you ultimately have to make that call yourself, but I have weighed in. Hoping all goes well.

i can tell you right now what I think from my own personal experience. I was spending about 4 hours a day writing for someone else about 2 years back and I was paid quite well. Then they offered me more work and I took it and I was earning great money - however it completely took me away from my own business and my websites went really quiet.

After some time I came to realize that if someone was eager to pay me good money to write all day for them what value was a taking away from my own business to build up someone else?

Yes writing for someone else was putting money in my pocket right then and there but long term I was not doing myself any favors.

I made the decision to never write for anyone else ever again, only for my own websites and it was the best decision I ever made.

I can't tell you what to do but I can tell you what I experienced :)

As one woman to another (Colette writing here), go with your 'female intuition'. This will be the right answer.

Just an wild idea...but have you tried to outsource your own writing? Obviously, you'll have to edit it to your requirements, but if it's not too far off from your specs, it will save you tons of time having to write everything from scratch.

It all depends on how much you're actually making by writing for this other blog, as opposed to how much you'll be forking out to outsource.

Only you know the answer to your questions. It is hard to know the answer but deep down I imagine you do know. Follow your heart!
