Is It Better to Choose Evergreen Niches?

Hi all.

I just wanted to post my thoughts as we come to the close of the year.

As we're coming to the end of 2021, I thought about how grateful I am that my niche websites are evergreen. Also, I'm glad I don't date my posts.

Why Don't I Date My Posts?

Well, I'll be honest. I don't date my posts because, once the year ends, and we go into the new year, I have to go back and re-date my old posts. Even though there's probably a plugin that can do that for me, I'd rather not have to worry about it.

Also, when people visit my site and they see old posts, they may think my site is dated, and may leave - unless, of course, I am regularly posting fresh content to my site. That means you've really got to be on your article writing game.

Even so, when I visit a site that has old dates on the posts, I get turned off.

So my posts are never dated.

And here's the kicker:

I make sure my niche blogs are evergreen.

What does an "evergreen niche" mean?

An evergreen niche is a niche that never gets old. It always has mass appeal. Some niches will always have universal problems that need solving, i.e., dog training, weight loss, making money online.

And, there are more niches that are evergreen like the baby niche. People will always have babies. And babies will always need clothes, diapers, etc.

Now, I know that people say these kinds of niches are oversaturated. But, thank goodness Wealthy Affiliate has taught me that there's always a new angle you can find to promote these evergreen niches.

Niches I Avoid Like the Plague

I try to make sure that the niche I pick will stand the test of time. Here's a good example of a niche that's not evergreen: Technology. Specifically cell phones.

I would never go into the computer/phone/technology niche. Why? That's because, every 6 months, manufacturer's are coming out with "the latest and greatest".

Who can keep up? People are always looking for the next shiny thing and readily discard the old for the new. So for me, I don't want to invest my time and money in a niche that changes frequently.

That brings me to my next point.

Seasonal blogs...

Why I Avoid Seaonal Blogs

There's nothing inherently wrong with seasonal blogs. But I dont' like seasonal blogs because, while they may make money, they only make money during that particular season. During the rest of the year, there's a lull.

I want a site that makes money all year round. Now, that's not to say these seasonal blogs don't make money year round. But people aren't usually buying Christmas gifts in May or June.

You know what I mean?

So, I'd rather not invest my time, energy or money into creating a blog that will only make most of it's money during a particular season.

Just my preference. No judgments.

So, I'll be entering 2022 with an evergreen site that's already up to date (because my posts aren't dated). I post fresh content weekly. I just thought I'd share my thoughts with you.

What are your thoughts? I'd love to hear your opinions.

While I enjoy having evergreen sites, I have a friend who has made a TON of money by quickly creating sites on hot topics, the newest fads or latest gadgets. She'll put up 20 or so articles on the topic, each about 1000-1200 words, carefully choosing the most popular keywords, and join the best affiliate programs available to sell the most popular items. She won't waste her time working with Amazon - commissions are too low, cookie's too short. While her sites may only generate commission for a few months, they generate so much money that she doesn't care if their online life is short.

It's not a strategy for everyone, but she's well-practiced at doing this and hugely successful at it.

Very thoughtful comments.
Thanks
Stephen

I like your insights, Shalisha!

Jeff

Hey Shalisha, I totally agree with staying away from fad niche or seasonal stuff.. makes a lot of sense to stick with something that will still be relevant in many years!

A very interesting read. Thanks for sharing your thoughts :-)

You're welcome. Thanks for stopping by.

My pleasure :-)
