Choosing the Right Product
Promoting the right product to your readers is very important. It builds trust, followers and revenue when people are satisfied and happy with your selection.
However, choosing the right product can be time consuming (at least I find it that way).
If you are struggling with the same problem, I'd like to share 7 criteria to help you choose the right product to promote.
NOTE: I learnt those criteria from ASM programe, which is in general selling on Amazon wanted product and building your own brand. So I tweak it to make it work for affiliates. I didn't come up with this wisdom, I merely listened, made notes and adjust it.
-------------
7 Criteria:
- Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA)
- Amazon Best Sellers Ranking in the top 5000 products of the top level category
- Selling price between $7 and $60
- More than 100 reviews
- Small in physical size and lightweight; ideally one pound or less
- Simple to use
- Something you're interested in or that you would use yourself.
------------
Do a web search for "Amazon Best Sellers". Click on the first link that comes up, which should be www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers/zgbs.
On the Amazon Best Sellers page, you'll see Amazon's categories, and to the right of the categories you'll see the top items displayed for each category.
Second Criteria: Amazon Best Sellers Ranking in the top 5000 products of the top level category
Any product in the top 5000 of one of the top level categories (the categories listed when you fist go to the Best Sellers page) will be a good selling opportunity.
You can find the ranking of any product by clicking on it, then scrolling down to the "Product Details" section and looking at the Amazon Best Sellers Rank. You only want to look at the first line, which is the product's ranking for the entire top-level category. You can ignore subcategory rankings, which appear under the top-level category rankings.
Third Criteria: Selling price between $7 and $60
The selling price of the product should be between $7 and $60. If you go lower that $7, you'll have a hard time making money. If you go over $60, people might get scared buying a product they can't see and touch and try it for themselves.
However, if you're confident in the product that has a higher price tag, by all means, feel free to write about it. I believe you can't find a proper flat screen TV for $60 :)
This $7 to $60 is only the average price range of the best selling products sold on Amazon.
Fourth Criteria: More than 300 reviews
Ideally, the product should have as many reviews as possible (a good reviews that is). If you find a product with less that 300 reviews, do a search of that product on Amazon using the key phrase in the product title (for example "iPhone 6 screen protector"). You may find that there are similar products with more than 300 reviews and are still ranked in the top 5000 sellers. This means that this seller has probably a better product description, better product pictures and better costumer service.
Fifth Criteria: Small in physical size and lightweight; ideally one pound or less
The product should be small and lightweight. It's not a must but sometimes heavier products can cost a fortune to ship - buying a $50 product and spending $20 to get it can be a deal breaker.
When you click into a product, you can find its weight by scrolling down to the "Product Details" section and looking at the Shipping Weight. If the Shipping Weight is not listed, you can use your judgement.
Sixth Criteria: Simple to use
Avoid products that are overly complex or have advanced technological components. I my experience, people rather buy those product in "physical" stores than online. They will look for info online but then most likely buy it off-line.
Seventh Criteria: Something you're interested in or that you would use yourself
This is not 100% necessary but will be very helpful down the road if you're promoting a product that you would use yourself.
---------
That is it. The 7 criteria mentioned above take into consideration the consumers point of view more than the affiliates. It shows the very safe side of what kind of products are people willing to purchase online and what kind of products are more tricky to sell online.
Stay awesome & good luck!

Thanks for these criteria. I am in one of those states that do not allow Amazon affiliates but these criteria are very valid.
Much appreciated,
Juan
Hi Juan, you can generally apply this to any product (not only on Amazon)..but then you have to scratch out FBA, ranking and things like that :)
Thank you & good luck :)
