What am I doing wrong?
Are you ding it in an incognito window? If not, Google will remember that you have been there before and will show it in that way :)
I just went google.com and typed it in. Just wanted to look at my site as a visitor. So how do I do that? Thanks in advance!
If you could open another browser window like internet explorer or Mozilla Firefox or opera and visit your site from there you should be good to go!!!

what chance would I have of achieving that?
The great thing is that there are so many keywords and topics out there, including many obscure ones. Now, some niches are easier to rank in than others but normally you can find low competition keywords for any niche if you do enough digging.
Often people try to balance competition and traffic, but yes. Low competition keywords are very important, especially early on, as they make it much easier to rank in Google.
Most people are, but all for different keywords and niches. Many websites come and go and there is still a lot of rubbish out there clogging up search results. So in short you stand exactly the same chance as everybody else - believe that! How Can I Rank Against the Big Blog Sites?

If you want to go into your site as a visitor, you must go into incognito.
